This excerpt is taken from the book "Hujjat-e-Hadith" by the virtuous Sheikh Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Amanpuri .
The Holy Quran has declared the person of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as the second source of Shariah. His obedience has been made obligatory, the criterion of being a Muslim is obedience to the Messenger, one cannot take meanings from the Quran according to their own wishes, rather the meanings and interpretations will be those which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has explained, what the Noble Master ﷺ has said. Similarly, whenever there is a difference, the command is to turn to him ﷺ. Allah has taken the responsibility of clarifying the Quran, how? Through the Messenger. Below are the verses of the Holy Quran in which the importance of obedience to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has been made clear, please observe:
[1] [وَ اتَّقُوا النَّارَ الَّتِیۡۤ اُعِدَّتۡ لِلۡکٰفِرِیۡنَ]،[وَ اَطِیۡعُوا اللّٰہَ وَ الرَّسُوۡلَ لَعَلَّکُمۡ تُرۡحَمُوۡنَ]
Fear the fire which is prepared for the disbelievers. Obey Allah and the Messenger so that mercy may be shown to you.
Reference: (Al-Imran:131-132)
[2] [قُلۡ اِنۡ کُنۡتُمۡ تُحِبُّوۡنَ اللّٰہَ فَاتَّبِعُوۡنِیۡ یُحۡبِبۡکُمُ اللّٰہُ وَ یَغۡفِرۡ لَکُمۡ ذُنُوۡبَکُمۡ ؕ وَ اللّٰہُ غَفُوۡرٌ رَّحِیۡمٌ]،[قُلۡ اَطِیۡعُوا اللّٰہَ وَ الرَّسُوۡلَ ۚ فَاِنۡ تَوَلَّوۡا فَاِنَّ اللّٰہَ لَا یُحِبُّ الۡکٰفِرِیۡنَ]
Say, if you love Allah, then obey me, Allah will love you and forgive your sins. Allah is Forgiving, Merciful. Say, obey Allah and the Messenger, but if they turn away, then indeed Allah does not love the disbelievers.
Reference: (Al-Imran:31-32)
[3] [فَلَا وَ رَبِّکَ لَا یُؤۡمِنُوۡنَ حَتّٰی یُحَکِّمُوۡکَ فِیۡمَا شَجَرَ بَیۡنَہُمۡ ثُمَّ لَا یَجِدُوۡا فِیۡۤ اَنۡفُسِہِمۡ حَرَجًا مِّمَّا قَضَیۡتَ وَ یُسَلِّمُوۡا تَسۡلِیۡمًا]
(By the Lord!) You cannot be believers until you accept the Messenger as a judge in your disputes and feel no resistance in your hearts to his decisions, but submit wholeheartedly.
Reference: (An-Nisa:65)
[4] [وَ مَنۡ یُّطِعِ اللّٰہَ وَ الرَّسُوۡلَ فَاُولٰٓئِکَ مَعَ الَّذِیۡنَ اَنۡعَمَ اللّٰہُ عَلَیۡہِمۡ مِّنَ النَّبِیّٖنَ وَ الصِّدِّیۡقِیۡنَ وَ الشُّہَدَآءِ وَ الصّٰلِحِیۡنَ ۚ وَ حَسُنَ اُولٰٓئِکَ رَفِیۡقًا]
Those who obey Allah and the Messenger will be with the blessed Prophets, the truthful, the martyrs, and the righteous. What excellent companions they are!
Reference: (An-Nisa:69)
[5] [مَنۡ یُّطِعِ الرَّسُوۡلَ فَقَدۡ اَطَاعَ اللّٰہَ ۚ وَ مَنۡ تَوَلّٰی فَمَاۤ اَرۡسَلۡنٰکَ عَلَیۡہِمۡ حَفِیۡظًا]
Whoever obeys the Messenger has obeyed Allah, and whoever turns away, We have not appointed you as a guardian over them.
Reference: (An-Nisa:80)
[6] [یٰۤاَیُّہَا الَّذِیۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡۤا اَطِیۡعُوا اللّٰہَ وَ اَطِیۡعُوا الرَّسُوۡلَ وَ اُولِی الۡاَمۡرِ مِنۡکُمۡ ۚ فَاِنۡ تَنَازَعۡتُمۡ فِیۡ شَیۡءٍ فَرُدُّوۡہُ اِلَی اللّٰہِ وَ الرَّسُوۡلِ اِنۡ کُنۡتُمۡ تُؤۡمِنُوۡنَ بِاللّٰہِ وَ الۡیَوۡمِ الۡاٰخِرِ ؕ ذٰلِکَ خَیۡرٌ وَّ اَحۡسَنُ تَاۡوِیۡلًا]
O you who believe! Obey Allah and the Messenger and those in authority among you. If you differ in anything, refer it to Allah and the Messenger, if you believe in Allah and the Last Day. That is better and more suitable for final determination.
Reference: (An-Nisa:59)
[7] [وَ مَنۡ یُّطِعِ اللّٰہَ وَ رَسُوۡلَہٗ یُدۡخِلۡہُ جَنّٰتٍ تَجۡرِیۡ مِنۡ تَحۡتِہَا الۡاَنۡہٰرُ خٰلِدِیۡنَ فِیۡہَا ؕ وَ ذٰلِکَ الۡفَوۡزُ الۡعَظِیۡمُ]،[ وَ مَنۡ یَّعۡصِ اللّٰہَ وَ رَسُوۡلَہٗ وَ یَتَعَدَّ حُدُوۡدَہٗ یُدۡخِلۡہُ نَارًا خَالِدًا فِیۡہَا ۪ وَ لَہٗ عَذَابٌ مُّہِیۡنٌ]
Those who obey Allah and His Messenger, He will admit them to gardens beneath which rivers flow, where they will abide forever. That is the great success. But those who disobey Allah and His Messenger and transgress His limits, He will admit them to the fire, where they will abide forever. For them is a humiliating punishment.
Reference: (An-Nisa:13-14)
[8] [اِنَّاۤ اَنۡزَلۡنَاۤ اِلَیۡکَ الۡکِتٰبَ بِالۡحَقِّ لِتَحۡکُمَ بَیۡنَ النَّاسِ بِمَاۤ اَرٰىکَ اللّٰہُ ؕ وَ لَا تَکُنۡ لِّلۡخَآئِنِیۡنَ خَصِیۡمًا]
We have sent down to you the Book in truth so that you may judge between people by what Allah has shown you. And do not be an advocate for the treacherous.
Reference: (An-Nisa:105)
[9] [وَ اَطِیۡعُوا اللّٰہَ وَ اَطِیۡعُوا الرَّسُوۡلَ وَ احۡذَرُوۡا ۚ فَاِنۡ تَوَلَّیۡتُمۡ فَاعۡلَمُوۡۤا اَنَّمَا عَلٰی رَسُوۡلِنَا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِیۡنُ]
Obey Allah and the Messenger and turn back; if you turn away, then know that Our Messenger is only responsible for clear conveyance.
Reference: (Al-Ma'idah:92)
[10] [فَاتَّقُوا اللّٰہَ وَ اَصۡلِحُوۡا ذَاتَ بَیۡنِکُمۡ وَ اَطِیۡعُوا اللّٰہَ وَ رَسُوۡلَہٗۤ اِنۡ کُنۡتُمۡ مُّؤۡمِنِیۡنَ]
Fear Allah and set things right among yourselves. Obey Allah and the Messenger if you are believers.
Reference: (Al-Anfal:1)
[11] [یٰۤاَیُّہَا الَّذِیۡنَ اٰمَنُوا اسۡتَجِیۡبُوۡا لِلّٰہِ وَ لِلرَّسُوۡلِ اِذَا دَعَاکُمۡ لِمَا یُحۡیِیۡکُمۡ]
O you who believe! Obey Allah and the Messenger when he calls you to that which gives you life.
Reference: (Al-Anfal:24)
[12] [وَ اَطِیۡعُوا اللّٰہَ وَ رَسُوۡلَہٗ وَ لَا تَنَازَعُوۡا فَتَفۡشَلُوۡا وَ تَذۡہَبَ رِیۡحُکُمۡ وَ اصۡبِرُوۡا ؕ اِنَّ اللّٰہَ مَعَ الصّٰبِرِیۡنَ]
Obey Allah and His Messenger and do not dispute, lest you lose courage and your strength departs. Be patient. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.
Reference: (Al-Anfal:46)
[13] [اِنَّمَا کَانَ قَوۡلَ الۡمُؤۡمِنِیۡنَ اِذَا دُعُوۡۤا اِلَی اللّٰہِ وَ رَسُوۡلِہٖ لِیَحۡکُمَ بَیۡنَہُمۡ اَنۡ یَّقُوۡلُوۡا سَمِعۡنَا وَ اَطَعۡنَا ؕ وَ اُولٰٓئِکَ ہُمُ الۡمُفۡلِحُوۡنَ]،[ وَ مَنۡ یُّطِعِ اللّٰہَ وَ رَسُوۡلَہٗ وَ یَخۡشَ اللّٰہَ وَ یَتَّقۡہِ فَاُولٰٓئِکَ ہُمُ الۡفَآئِزُوۡنَ]
When the believers are called to Allah and His Messenger to judge between them, they say, "We hear and obey." Those are the successful. Those who obey Allah and the Messenger and fear Allah and are conscious of Him - it is those who are the successful.
Reference: (An-Nur:51-52)
[14] [وَ اَقِیۡمُوا الصَّلٰوۃَ وَ اٰتُوا الزَّکٰوۃَ وَ اَطِیۡعُوا الرَّسُوۡلَ لَعَلَّکُمۡ تُرۡحَمُوۡنَ]
Establish prayer, give zakah, and obey the Messenger so that mercy may be shown to you.
Reference: (An-Nur:56)
[15] [قُلۡ اَطِیۡعُوا اللّٰہَ وَ اَطِیۡعُوا الرَّسُوۡلَ ۚ فَاِنۡ تَوَلَّوۡا فَاِنَّمَا عَلَیۡہِ مَا حُمِّلَ وَ عَلَیۡکُمۡ مَّا حُمِّلۡتُمۡ ؕ وَ اِنۡ تُطِیۡعُوۡہُ تَہۡتَدُوۡا ؕ وَ مَا عَلَی الرَّسُوۡلِ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِیۡنُ]
Say, obey Allah and the Messenger; but if they turn away, then Allah does not love the disbelievers. Your duty is only to convey clearly.
Reference: (An-Nur:54)
[16] [فَلۡیَحۡذَرِ الَّذِیۡنَ یُخَالِفُوۡنَ عَنۡ اَمۡرِہٖۤ اَنۡ تُصِیۡبَہُمۡ فِتۡنَۃٌ اَوۡ یُصِیۡبَہُمۡ عَذَابٌ اَلِیۡمٌ]
Those who disobey the Prophet, let them desist, lest a trial befall them or a painful punishment befall them.
Reference: (An-Nur:63)
[17] [اِنَّمَا الۡمُؤۡمِنُوۡنَ الَّذِیۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡا بِاللّٰہِ وَ رَسُوۡلِہٖ وَ اِذَا کَانُوۡا مَعَہٗ عَلٰۤی اَمۡرٍ جَامِعٍ لَّمۡ یَذۡہَبُوۡا حَتّٰی یَسۡتَاۡذِنُوۡہُ ؕ اِنَّ الَّذِیۡنَ یَسۡتَاۡذِنُوۡنَکَ اُولٰٓئِکَ الَّذِیۡنَ یُؤۡمِنُوۡنَ بِاللّٰہِ وَ رَسُوۡلِہٖ ۚ فَاِذَا اسۡتَاۡذَنُوۡکَ لِبَعۡضِ شَاۡنِہِمۡ فَاۡذَنۡ لِّمَنۡ شِئۡتَ مِنۡہُمۡ وَ اسۡتَغۡفِرۡ لَہُمُ اللّٰہَ ؕ اِنَّ اللّٰہَ غَفُوۡرٌ رَّحِیۡمٌ]
The believers are those who believe in Allah and His Messenger and, when they are called to a matter of collective decision, do not go away until they have sought permission. (O Prophet!) Those who seek your permission are those who believe in Allah and His Messenger. When they ask your permission for some matter, allow whom you will and ask forgiveness for them from Allah. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
Reference: (An-Nur:62)
[18] [یٰۤاَیُّہَا الَّذِیۡنَ اٰمَنُوا اتَّقُوا اللّٰہَ وَ قُوۡلُوۡا قَوۡلًا سَدِیۡدًا]،[ یُّصۡلِحۡ لَکُمۡ اَعۡمَالَکُمۡ وَ یَغۡفِرۡ لَکُمۡ ذُنُوۡبَکُمۡ ؕ وَ مَنۡ یُّطِعِ اللّٰہَ وَ رَسُوۡلَہٗ فَقَدۡ فَازَ فَوۡزًا عَظِیۡمًا]
O you who believe! Fear Allah and speak words of appropriate justice. He will correct your deeds and forgive your sins. Whoever obeys Allah and the Messenger has certainly attained a great attainment.
Reference: (Al-Ahzab:70-71)
[19] [لَقَدۡ کَانَ لَکُمۡ فِیۡ رَسُوۡلِ اللّٰہِ اُسۡوَۃٌ حَسَنَۃٌ لِّمَنۡ کَانَ یَرۡجُوا اللّٰہَ وَ الۡیَوۡمَ الۡاٰخِرَ وَ ذَکَرَ اللّٰہَ کَثِیۡرًا]
Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah you have a good example to follow for whoever hopes in Allah and the Last Day and remembers Allah often.
Reference: (Al-Ahzab:21)
[20] [یٰۤاَیُّہَا الَّذِیۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡۤا اَطِیۡعُوا اللّٰہَ وَ اَطِیۡعُوا الرَّسُوۡلَ وَ لَا تُبۡطِلُوۡۤا اَعۡمَالَکُمۡ]
O you who believe! Obey Allah and the Messenger and do not invalidate your deeds.
Reference: (Muhammad:33)
[21] [یٰۤاَیُّہَا الَّذِیۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡۤا اَطِیۡعُوا اللّٰہَ وَ رَسُوۡلَہٗ وَ لَا تَوَلَّوۡا عَنۡہُ وَ اَنۡتُمۡ تَسۡمَعُوۡنَ]
O you who believe! Obey Allah and His Messenger and do not turn away from him while you hear.
Reference: (Al-Anfal:20)
[22] [وَ مَنۡ یُّطِعِ اللّٰہَ وَ رَسُوۡلَہٗ یُدۡخِلۡہُ جَنّٰتٍ تَجۡرِیۡ مِنۡ تَحۡتِہَا الۡاَنۡہٰرُ ۚ وَ مَنۡ یَّتَوَلَّ یُعَذِّبۡہُ عَذَابًا اَلِیۡمًا]
Whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger, He will admit him to gardens beneath which rivers flow. But whoever turns away from His obedience, He will punish him with a painful punishment.
Reference: (Al-Fath:17)
[23] [وَ مَاۤ اٰتٰىکُمُ الرَّسُوۡلُ فَخُذُوۡہُ وَ مَا نَہٰىکُمۡ عَنۡہُ فَانۡتَہُوۡا ۚ وَ اتَّقُوا اللّٰہَ ؕ اِنَّ اللّٰہَ شَدِیۡدُ الۡعِقَابِ]
Take what the Messenger gives you and refrain from what he forbids you. Fear Allah; indeed, Allah is severe in punishment.
Reference: (Al-Hashr:7)
[24] [وَ اَطِیۡعُوا اللّٰہَ وَ اَطِیۡعُوا الرَّسُوۡلَ ۚ فَاِنۡ تَوَلَّیۡتُمۡ فَاِنَّمَا عَلٰی رَسُوۡلِنَا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِیۡنُ]
Obey Allah and the Messenger; but if you turn away, then Our Messenger's duty is only to convey clearly.
Reference: (At-Taghabun:12)
[25] [رَّسُوۡلًا یَّتۡلُوۡا عَلَیۡکُمۡ اٰیٰتِ اللّٰہِ مُبَیِّنٰتٍ لِّیُخۡرِجَ الَّذِیۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡا وَ عَمِلُوا الصّٰلِحٰتِ مِنَ الظُّلُمٰتِ اِلَی النُّوۡرِ ؕ وَ مَنۡ یُّؤۡمِنۡۢ بِاللّٰہِ وَ یَعۡمَلۡ صَالِحًا یُّدۡخِلۡہُ جَنّٰتٍ تَجۡرِیۡ مِنۡ تَحۡتِہَا الۡاَنۡہٰرُ خٰلِدِیۡنَ فِیۡہَاۤ اَبَدًا ؕ قَدۡ اَحۡسَنَ اللّٰہُ لَہٗ رِزۡقًا]
He is the Messenger who recites to you the clear verses of Allah to bring out those who believe and do righteous deeds from darkness into light. Those who believe in Allah and do good deeds, He will admit them to gardens beneath which rivers flow, where they will abide forever. Allah has prepared for them a good provision.
Reference: (At-Talaq:11)
[26] [اِنَّاۤ اَرۡسَلۡنٰکَ شَاہِدًا وَّ مُبَشِّرًا وَّ نَذِیۡرًا]،[لِّتُؤۡمِنُوۡا بِاللّٰہِ وَ رَسُوۡلِہٖ وَ تُعَزِّرُوۡہُ وَ تُوَقِّرُوۡہُ ؕ وَ تُسَبِّحُوۡہُ بُکۡرَۃً وَّ اَصِیۡلًا]
We have sent you as a witness and bringer of good tidings and a warner so that you may believe in Allah and His Messenger, support him, honor him, and glorify Allah morning and evening.
Reference: (Al-Fath:8-9)
[27] [وَ مَاۤ اَرۡسَلۡنَا مِنۡ رَّسُوۡلٍ اِلَّا لِیُطَاعَ بِاِذۡنِ اللّٰہِ ؕ]
We sent every Messenger so that he would be obeyed by Allah's permission.
Reference: (An-Nisa:64)
[28] [وَ اِذَا قِیۡلَ لَہُمۡ تَعَالَوۡا اِلٰی مَاۤ اَنۡزَلَ اللّٰہُ وَ اِلَی الرَّسُوۡلِ رَاَیۡتَ الۡمُنٰفِقِیۡنَ یَصُدُّوۡنَ عَنۡکَ صُدُوۡدًا]
When it is said to them, "Come to what Allah has revealed and to the Messenger," you see the hypocrites turning away from you in aversion.
Reference: (An-Nisa:61)
[29] [وَ اِذَا قِیۡلَ لَہُمۡ تَعَالَوۡا اِلٰی مَاۤ اَنۡزَلَ اللّٰہُ وَ اِلَی الرَّسُوۡلِ قَالُوۡا حَسۡبُنَا مَا وَجَدۡنَا عَلَیۡہِ اٰبَآءَنَا ؕ اَوَ لَوۡ کَانَ اٰبَآؤُہُمۡ لَا یَعۡلَمُوۡنَ شَیۡئًا وَّ لَا یَہۡتَدُوۡنَ]
When it is said to them, "Come to what Allah has revealed and to the Messenger," they say, "Enough for us is that upon which we found our forefathers," even though their forefathers knew nothing and were not guided.
Reference: (Al-Ma'idah:104)
