Qur’anic and Logical Proofs for the Existence of God

❀ Qur’anic and Rational Evidence for the Existence of God ❀

Introduction

Imagine sitting alone in a locked room, with no access in or out. Suddenly, a desk and computer appear in the middle of the room, and the screen flashes a message:

“This came into existence by itself. No one made it.”

Naturally, you would reject this claim. You would reason that everything must have a cause or creator—this is what logic and intellect demand.

The Qur’an appeals to the same logic and reasoning when it presents arguments for the existence of God. This article analyzes those arguments and the conclusions drawn from them.

Rational Arguments in the Qur’an

Four Logical Possibilities for the Origin of the Universe

The Qur’an presents a compelling argument in Surah al-Tur:

أَمْ خُلِقُوا مِنْ غَيْرِ شَيْءٍ أَمْ هُمُ الْخَالِقُونَ ● أَمْ خَلَقُوا السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ ۚ بَل لَّا يُوقِنُونَ
“Were they created from nothing? Or were they themselves the creators? Or did they create the heavens and the earth? Rather, they are not certain.”
[Surah al-Tur: 35–36]

This passage proposes four possibilities for the origin of creation:

Created from nothing (عدم سے وجود)
Created themselves (خود کو تخلیق کرنا)
Created by another created being (کسی دوسری مخلوق کی تخلیق)
Created by an uncreated Creator (ایک غیر مخلوق خالق)

The Qur’an refutes the first three and points towards the fourth as the only rational and logical conclusion.

Explanation of the Possibilities

① Created from Nothing

  • Nonexistence (‘adam’) has no power, cause, or will.
  • Therefore, nothing can come from nothing—this is an irrational notion.

② Self-Creation

  • For something to create itself, it must exist and not exist at the same time.
  • This is a logical contradiction and thus impossible.

③ Created by Another Created Being

  • This leads to an infinite regress: who created the first creator, and who created that one?
  • An infinite chain without a starting point is logically invalid.

④ Created by an Uncreated Creator

  • The only viable explanation is a necessary being who is not created, and who is the originator of everything else.

Philosophical Perspective: The Universe Is Finite

Rejection of Material Infinity

  • True physical infinity is not possible.
  • Example: If you had infinite balls and removed two, mathematically it's still infinite—but physically it makes no sense.

The Universe Has a Beginning

  • Scientific and philosophical consensus supports that the universe had a beginning.
  • Therefore, it must have a cause beyond itself.

Attributes of the Creator According to Qur’an

Eternal (أزلی):

  • God has no beginning, He always existed.

"He neither begets nor is born."
(Surah al-Ikhlas: 2–3)

Transcendent (ماوراء):

  • God is distinct from His creation, like a carpenter building a chair without being part of the chair.

All-Knowing (علیم):

  • The intricate design of the universe indicates a knowing creator.

"Indeed, Allah is Knowing of all things."
(Surah al-Mujadilah: 7)

All-Powerful (قدیر):

  • Creating the universe requires immense power.

"Allah has power over all things."
(Surah al-Baqarah: 20)

Willful Creator (ارادہ رکھنے والا):

  • Creation was brought into existence by divine will and purpose.

"Allah does whatever He wills."
(Surah Hud: 107)

Summary

The Qur’an presents a logical and philosophical argument that the universe must have a Creator who is:

Uncreated
Eternal
Transcendent
All-Knowing
All-Powerful
Willful

This reasoning invites human beings to reflect deeply on the signs of creation, and to accept the existence of a wise and powerful God as the only sound conclusion.
