Punishment of the Jinn in the Hereafter According to Quran and Hadith

Will the Jinn Be Punished in the Hereafter?

Source: Fatāwā Amunpūrī by Shaykh Ghulām Muṣṭafā Ẓahīr Amunpūrī

❖ Question

Will the jinn be punished in the Hereafter?

❖ Answer

Yes. The jinn are legally accountable (mukallaf) under the Sharīʿah. The Prophet ﷺ was sent to both mankind and jinn. Among them are believers and disbelievers. The righteous among them will enter Paradise, while the disbelievers and sinners will enter Hell.

❖ Evidence from the Qur’ān

Allah ﷻ says:
﴿لَأَمْلَأَنَّ جَهَنَّمَ مِنَ الْجِنَّةِ وَالنَّاسِ أَجْمَعِينَ﴾
(Sūrat Hūd: 119)

“I will surely fill Hell with both jinn and mankind together.”

❖ Scholarly Consensus

Imām al-Nawawī (d. 676H):
((اتفق العلماء على أن الجن يعذبون فى الآخرة على المعاصي))
“The scholars are unanimously agreed that in the Hereafter, the jinn will also be punished for their sins.”
Sharḥ Muslim 4/169

✅ Conclusion

  • The jinn are accountable just like humans.
  • Believing and righteous jinn will be rewarded with Paradise.
  • Disbelieving and sinful jinn will be punished in Hell.
  • This is affirmed by both Qur’ān and scholarly consensus.
