❖ Question
What do the scholars say about the punishment of the grave (ʿadhab al-qabr)?
❖ Answer
الحمد لله، والصلاة والسلام علىٰ رسول الله، أما بعد!
The punishment of the grave is true and established. The Qur’an, Hadith, and consensus (ijmaʿ) all prove it.
◈ Evidence from Hadith
- ʿA’ishah رضي الله عنها narrates:
A Jewish woman came to her and mentioned the punishment of the grave, and said: May Allah protect you from the punishment of the grave. So ʿA’ishah asked Rasulullah ﷺ about it. He replied: Yes, the punishment of the grave is real. ʿA’ishah said: After that, I never saw Rasulullah ﷺ perform any prayer except that he sought refuge from the punishment of the grave.
In one narration, Ghundar added: “The punishment of the grave is true.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari 1372; Sahih Muslim 584)
◈ Scholarly Consensus
- Hafiz Ibn al-Mulaqqin (804 AH) رحمه الله said:
"الحديث أن عذاب القبر حق، وأهل السنة مجمعون على الإيمان به والتصديق، ولا ينكره إلا مبتدع"
"This hadith proves that the punishment of the grave is true. Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jamaʿah are unanimous upon believing in it and affirming it, and none deny it except an innovator."
(al-Tawdih 8/337)
◈ Conclusion
- The punishment of the grave is Haqq (truth).
- It is established through authentic hadith.
- The consensus of Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jamaʿah confirms it.
- Its denial is the way of innovators (ahl al-bid‘ah).
