The Question
Is suspicion (bad ghumānī) ḥarām in Islam?
The Answer
Yes, harboring suspicion is ḥarām.
Qur’ānic Evidence
Allah ﷻ says:
﴿يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اجْتَنِبُوا كَثِيرًا مِنَ الظَّنِّ إِنَّ بَعْضَ الظَّنِّ إِثْمٌ﴾
(al-Ḥujurāt: 12)
“O you who believe! Avoid much suspicion; indeed, some suspicion is sin.”
Prophetic Evidence
Sayyidunā Abū Hurayrah رضي الله عنه narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“Beware of suspicion, for suspicion is the most false of speech.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 5143; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 2563)
Conclusion
- Suspicion without basis is ḥarām, as it corrupts hearts and relationships.
- Both the Qur’an and authentic Sunnah clearly prohibit it.
