① Hazrat Ibn ʿAbbās (رضي الله عنهما) narrates that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
لا تلقوا الركبان
"Do not meet the caravans bringing goods (before they reach the market)."

② Hazrat Abu Hurairah (رضي الله عنه) narrates that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
لا تلقـوا الـجلب فمن تلقى فاشترى منه فإذا أتـي سـيـده السوق فهو بالخيار
"Do not meet those bringing grain into the city. Whoever meets them and buys from them (on the way), then when the owner reaches the market, he has the choice (either to uphold the sale or cancel it)."

Explanation:
This occurs when a city dweller meets a Bedouin before he reaches the city market, deceives him about the actual prices, and purchases his goods at a lower rate than their real market value. The prohibition aims to protect sellers from fraud and harm.
Note on the Ruling:
The hadith wording فصاحبه بالخيار إذا ورد السوق indicates that such a sale is valid (ṣaḥīḥ) but gives the seller the option to revoke it upon reaching the market.

- Imam Abu Hanifah (رحمه الله): Considered it permissible — but the aforementioned Ahadith refute this.

Scholarly Definitions of Hoarding
- Ibn Ḥajar (رحمه الله):
Legally prohibited hoarding is to withhold grain, refraining from selling it while awaiting higher prices, at a time when people are in dire need of it, and the hoarder himself is not in need.
Reference: Fatḥ al-Bārī 5/81 - Imam Nawawi (رحمه الله):
The prohibited hoarding is specifically in food items — when one buys grain during a time of inflation to store it until prices rise further. However, if someone stores grain during times of low prices, or during inflation but only for personal consumption, or buys to sell immediately, this is not hoarding and carries no prohibition.
