Prohibition of insistently asking, questioning people, and asking without need

This excerpt is taken from the Arabic book Al-Awamer wal-Nawahi by Sheikh Hussain bin Mubarak Al-Mawsili, whose Urdu translation has been done by Muhammad Sarwar Gohar Sahib under the title Ahkamat o Mamnooat.


Prohibition of Insisting and Persistently Asking​


① Sayyiduna Muawiyah رضي الله عنه narrates that the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم said:
لا تلحفوا فى المسألة فو الله لا يسألني أحد منكم شيئا فتخرج له مسألته مني شيئا و أنا له كاره ، فيبارك له فيما أعطيته
“Do not insist and persistently ask. By Allah! If any of you asks me for something and despite my displeasure he continues to ask and manages to get something from me, it will not be that the thing given by me to him will be blessed.”

Prohibition of Asking People for Things​


① Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:
من سأل الناس أموالهم تكثيرا فإنما يسأل جمرا فليستقل أو ليستكثر
"Whoever asks people for an increase in wealth is asking for burning coals, whether he receives less or more."

② Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) narrates that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
لا تزال المسألة بأحدكم حتى يلقى الله وما على وجهه مزعة لحم
"None of you should keep asking people persistently until he meets Allah, and there will not be a piece of flesh on his face."

③ Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:
من سأل الناس وله ما يغنيه جاء يوم القيامة ومسألته فى وجهه خموش أو خدوش أو كدوح
"Whoever asks people despite having enough to meet his needs, on the Day of Resurrection his asking will appear on his face as a scratch, abrasion, or an ugly mark."
It was asked: O Messenger of Allah! How much is enough to meet his needs? He (peace be upon him) said:
خمسون درهما أو قيمتها من الذهب
"Fifty dirhams or gold of that value."

④ Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:
ليس المسكين الذى ترده الأكلة والأكلتان ولكن المسكين المتعفف
"A poor person is not one who is repaid with one morsel for one meal or two morsels for two meals. Rather, the poor is the one who refrains from asking."

⑤ Sayyiduna Hakim bin Hizam (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
أليد العليا خير من اليد السفلى وابدأ بمن تعول و خير الصدقة عن ظهر غنى و من يستعفف يعفه الله
"The upper hand is better than the lower hand. And whoever is under your care, start spending on them first, and the best charity is that which is given after fulfilling one's needs. And whoever wants to avoid asking, Allah will suffice him."

Prohibition of Asking Questions Without Necessity​


① Sayyiduna Sahl bin Hunzalah رضي الله عنه narrates, the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم said:
من سأل و عنده ما يغنيه فإنما يستكثر من النار
"Whoever asks despite having enough, he is adding to the fire."

② Sayyiduna Thawban رضي الله عنه narrates that the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم said:
من يكفل لي أن لا يسأل الناس شيئا وأتكفل له بالجنة
"Whoever guarantees me that he will not ask people for anything, I guarantee him Paradise."
Then Sayyiduna Thawban رضي الله عنه said: I do. So he did not ask anyone for anything.

③ Sayyiduna Zubair رضي الله عنه narrates the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم said:
لأن يأخذ أحدكم حبله ثم يأتى الجبل فيأتي بحزمة من حطب على ظهره فيبيعها خير له من أن يسأل الناس أعطوه أو منعوه
"If any one of you takes his rope and goes to the mountain and brings a bundle of wood on his back and sells it, that is better than asking people. Maybe they will give or maybe they will not."
