Prohibition of Drinking Alcohol and Eating or Drinking from Forbidden Vessels

This excerpt is taken from Sheikh Hussain bin Mubarak Al-Mawsili's Arabic book Al-Awamer wal-Nawahi, which has been translated into Urdu by Muhammad Sarwar Gohar Sahib under the title Ahkamat o Mamnoaat.

Prohibition of Alcohol Consumption​

① It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar رضي الله عنهما that the Prophet Muhammad صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم said:
كل مسكر خمر ، وكل مسكر حرام ، ومن شرب الخمر فى الدنيا فمات وهو يدمنها ولم يتب لم يشربها فى الآخرة
"Every intoxicating thing is wine, and every intoxicating thing is forbidden. Whoever drinks wine in this world and dies without repenting, he will not drink (the pure wine) in the Hereafter."

② It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar رضي الله عنهما that the Prophet Muhammad صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم said:
من شرب الخمر فلم ينتش لم تقبل له صلاة ما دام فى جوفه أو عروقه منها شيء ، وإن مات مات كافرا ، وإن انتشى لم تقبل له صلاة أربعين يوما ، وإن مات فيها مات كافرا
"Whoever drinks wine and does not become intoxicated, his prayer will not be accepted as long as the wine remains in his stomach or veins, and if he dies in that state, he will die in a state of disbelief. And if he becomes intoxicated, then his prayers for forty days will not be accepted, and if he dies in that state, he will die in a state of disbelief."

② Sayyiduna Anas رضي الله عنه says:
"The Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم cursed ten people because of wine: the one who makes it, the one who orders it to be made, the one who drinks it, the one who gives it to drink, the one who carries it, the one for whom it is carried, the one who sells it, the one who buys it, the one who gives it as a gift, and the one who earns from its price (all of them are cursed)."

③ It is narrated from Sayyida Aisha رضي الله عنها that the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم said:
كل شراب أسكر فهو حرام
"Every intoxicating drink is forbidden."

④ It is also narrated from Sayyida Aisha رضي الله عنها that the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم said:
كل مسكر حرام ، وما أسكر منه الفرق فملء الكف منه حرام
"Every intoxicating thing is forbidden. If a small amount of wine (approximately seven kilograms or twelve mudd) intoxicates, then even one chilo (a smaller measure) of it is forbidden."

⑤ It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir رضي الله عنه that the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم said:
ما أسكر كثيره فقليله حرام
"Whatever quantity of a thing intoxicates in large amount, its small amount is also forbidden."

⑥ It is also narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir رضي الله عنه that a man came from Jishan (a region in Yemen) and asked the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم about the corn wine (mazr) drunk in his country. The Prophet صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم asked: "Is it intoxicating?" He replied: Yes! The Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم said:
كل مسكر حرام ، وإن على الله عهدا لمن يشرب المسكر أن يسقيه من طينة الخبال
"Every intoxicating thing is forbidden, and Allah has made a covenant that He will make the one who uses intoxicating things drink طينة الخبال."
The Companions رضي الله عنهم asked: O Messenger of Allah! What is طينة الخبال? He صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم said:
عرق أهل النار أو عصارة أهل النار
"The sweat or the extract of the inhabitants of Hell."

Vessels in which drinking is prohibited​

① Sayyiduna Jabir رضي الله عنه states, I asked Sayyiduna Ibn Umar رضي الله عنهما: Tell me about the drinks from which the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم forbade and explain it to me because your language is different from ours. He said:
"The Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم forbade drinking from Dabba (gourd vessels), Hantam (green clay pots), Naqir (wooden carved bowls), and Muzaffat (vessels mixed with tar)."

Prohibition of eating and drinking from gold and silver vessels​

① Sayyida Umm Salamah رضي الله عنها narrates that the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم said:
من شرب فى إناء من ذهب أو فضة فإنما يجرجر فى بطنه نارا من جهنم
"Whoever drinks from a gold or silver vessel, he is pouring the fire of Hell into his stomach."

② Abdul Rahman bin Abi Layla رحمه الله narrates that he was with Sayyiduna Hudhayfah رضي الله عنه in Madinah. He asked for water, and a Magian presented water in a silver vessel, which he threw away and said: Although I had told him not to give me water in it, because I heard the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم say:
لا تلبسوا الحرير ولا الديباج ولا تشربوا فى آنية الذهب والفضة ، ولا تأكلوا فى صحافهما فإنها لهم فى الدنيا ولكم فى الآخرة
"Do not wear silk nor silk expensive cloth, do not drink from gold and silver vessels nor eat from their plates, because these are for them (the disbelievers) in this world and for you is the Hereafter."
