Presentation of Deeds to the Deceased

Author: Maulana Abu al-Hasan Mubashir Ahmad Rabbani

Question:

In Musnad Abi Dawood Tayalisi, Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Your deeds are presented to your relatives and kin in their graves. If they see good deeds, they are pleased, and if they see any bad deeds, they say: 'O Allah! Grant them the ability to do acts of obedience to You.'" [Musnad Abi Dawood Tayalisi 1903, Musnad Ahmad 3/165]. Is this narration authentic, and are our deeds truly presented to our relatives in their graves?

Answer:

The aforementioned narration is not authentic and is extremely weak. In its chain of narrators, there is a narrator named Salat bin Dinan, who has been deemed weak and abandoned by Imam Ahmad, Imam Yahya ibn Ma'in, Imam Abdul Rahman ibn Mahdi, Imam Bukhari, Imam Juzjani, Imam Darqutni, and Imam Nasa'i, among others. No hadith scholar has authenticated him. [Mizan al-I'tidal 1/318]

Similarly, there is also Tadlis (concealment of a defect in the chain) by the narrator Hasan in its chain. Therefore, this narration cannot be considered authentic in any way that suggests all our deeds are presented to the deceased.
