It is narrated in both Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim from ʿUbādah ibn aṣ-Ṣāmit (رضي الله عنه) that the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said:
"Pledge allegiance to me that you will not associate anything with Allah, will not commit fornication, will not steal, and will not kill anyone unjustly. Whoever fulfills this pledge, his reward is with Allah. And whoever commits any of these sins and is punished for it in this world, then that punishment is an expiation for him. And whoever commits any of these sins and Allah conceals it, then his matter is with Allah: if He wills, He may forgive him, and if He wills, He may punish him."
[Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Ḥadīth 4894; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 1709/41]
This ḥadith clearly indicates that when Hudood punishments are applied to someone, they serve as expiation (kaffārah) for the sin.
