Prescribed Blood Money (Diyyah) for Accidental Killing in Islam

Narration:
[Abū Dāwūd: 4541, Nasā’ī: 8/42–43, Ibn Mājah: 2630]

Translation of the Hadith:

ʿUqbah bin Aws narrates from ʿAbdullāh bin ʿAmr that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ruled:
“Whoever is killed accidentally, his Diyyah is one hundred camels: thirty one-year-old she-camels (Bint Makhaāḍ), thirty two-year-old she-camels (Bint Labūn), thirty three-year-old she-camels (Ḥiqqah), and ten two-year-old male camels (Ibn Labūn).”

Authentication:
The Hadith is graded Ḥasan (sound). Reported by Abū Dāwūd, al-Nasā’ī, and Ibn Mājah.

✿ Key Points and Rulings ✿

The Diyyah for accidental killing is one hundred camels.
The prescribed breakdown is:
  • 30 one-year-old female camels (Bint Makhaāḍ)
  • 30 two-year-old female camels (Bint Labūn)
  • 30 three-year-old female camels (Ḥiqqah)
  • 10 two-year-old male camels (Ibn Labūn)

The Diyyah in accidental killing is not aggravated (Mughallaẓah); rather, it is considered light (Khafīfah) compared to intentional killing.

The payment of Diyyah in cases of accidental killing is the responsibility of the ‘Āqilah—the paternal male relatives of the killer—who are obligated to collectively bear the compensation.
