Prayer Attire Guidelines for Worshippers According to Islamic Teachings

🧥 Overview of Clothing in Islam

Allah has blessed humankind with clothing to cover their private parts and as a means of adornment. Alongside this, the clothing of piety is emphasized as the best. Islam, being a comprehensive way of life, instructs its followers to observe modesty in dress, particularly during acts of worship. Clothing in prayer should reflect humility, decency, and respect for standing before the Almighty.

👔 Men’s Attire in Prayer

① Covering the ‘Awrah (Private Area):
Men must ensure their body from the navel to the knees is covered during prayer. This is a minimum requirement for the validity of prayer.

② Covering the Shoulders:
It is important for men to have their shoulders covered while performing Salah. Praying in a way that leaves the shoulders bare is discouraged.

③ Keeping the Ankles Visible:
Men are required to keep their ankles uncovered, as lowering garments below the ankles is linked to pride and has been discouraged.

④ Uncovering the Face:
It is undesirable for a man to cover his face during Salah. Companions of the Prophet used to uncover the faces of those who mistakenly covered them.

⑤ Avoiding Sadal (Draping Garments Without Sleeves):
Men are instructed not to drape garments over their shoulders in a way that resembles a shawl hanging without use of sleeves.

🧕 Women’s Attire in Prayer

① Wearing a Head Covering (Khimar):
A mature woman must cover her head during prayer. Praying without a head covering invalidates the Salah.

② Full Body Coverage:
Women should cover their entire bodies, leaving only the face and hands exposed. Loose, non-transparent clothing is required, and the feet should be covered as well.

③ Avoid Hair Buns:
Women are advised not to tie their hair in a bun at the back of the head while praying.

⚠️ Important Considerations for Both Genders

① Simplicity in Clothing:
Worshippers should wear simple clothing to avoid distraction during Salah. Garments with distracting patterns or features should be avoided.

② Avoiding Rolled Sleeves and Tied Hair in Prayer:
It is discouraged to roll up sleeves or tie back hair during prayer. Worship should reflect a natural and humble state.

③ Praying in Limited Clothing:
If one possesses only a single garment, it should be used to cover the required parts properly, and Salah may still be performed.

④ Closing Open Necklines:
If wearing a long shirt without trousers, the opening at the neck should be closed to ensure proper coverage during movements in prayer.

⑤ Praying Bareheaded (Men):
Praying bareheaded is permissible, especially when done out of humility. It does not invalidate the prayer, although wearing a head covering like a cap or turban is preferred.

⑥ Praying in Trousers (Pants):
Trousers worn during Salah should be loose and long enough to ensure the private parts are fully covered. It is ideal to wear a long shirt over them for complete modesty.

⑦ Praying Bareheaded in Hajj:
Men remain bareheaded during Hajj as part of the state of Ihram, and they perform prayers this way, highlighting that it is permissible and in no way shows disrespect.

⑧ Avoid Intentionally Placing Headwear Beside Oneself in Prayer:
Removing the head covering during prayer without necessity, especially to place it in front or on the side, is considered against the etiquette of Salah.

⑨ Praying with a Turban:
Praying with a turban is considered virtuous, but praying without one is also from the Sunnah. However, shaving the beard and praying is contrary to the practice of the Prophet.

By observing these clothing etiquettes in prayer, a Muslim not only fulfills the physical requirements of Salah but also embodies the spiritual discipline and humility that this sacred act demands.
