Imām Muḥammad ibn Sīrīn (رحمه الله) (d. 110 AH) was elevated to such a lofty level of asceticism (zuhd) and piety (taqwā) that if someone gave him counterfeit currency, he would not pass it on to anyone. Instead, he would simply set it aside and discard it. ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAwn (رحمه الله) (d. 150 AH) said:

“If a counterfeit dirham or one mixed with silver came to Ibn Sīrīn (رحمه الله), he would never give it to another person; he would simply put it aside. When he passed away, there were five hundred such counterfeit dirhams in his house.”
(al-Ṭabaqāt al-Kubrā by Ibn Saʿd, vol. 7, p. 201-202; chain authentic)

Imām Masrūq (رحمه الله) (d. 62 AH) said:

“I was walking with (Sayyidunā) Ubayy ibn Kaʿb (رضي الله عنه) when a young man asked him a question, ‘Uncle, what is your ruling on this?’ Ubayy (رضي الله عنه) replied, ‘My nephew! Has this issue actually occurred?’ The young man said, ‘No.’ So Ubayy (رضي الله عنه) said, ‘Then spare us until it happens!’
This means:
They would only issue fatwās after an issue had actually occurred, not on hypothetical or imaginary questions.
(Sunan al-Dārimī 1/55, Ḥadīth 54; chain authentic)
