Source: Fatawa ‘Ulama-e-Hadith, Kitab al-Salah, Volume 1, Page 222

❀ Question:

A mosque Imam has mortgaged a piece of land. Is it permissible to pray behind him?

✔ Ruling:

If the Imam has mortgaged a piece of land and is benefiting from its income while not deducting this value from the principal loan amount, this act falls under riba (usury). In Islamic law, riba is strictly forbidden.

In such a scenario, the Imam should be advised that his action is religiously impermissible and akin to engaging in interest-based transactions. If the Imam persists in this unlawful practice, then it is not permissible to pray behind him, as dealing in riba is a grave sin according to authentic Hadith.
