Permissibility of Using the Urine of Halal Animals for Treatment

Using the Urine of Halal Animals for Treatment

Taken from: Fatawa Amunpuri by Shaykh Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Amunpuri

❖ Question:

Is it permissible to use the urine of halal animals for medical treatment?

❖ Answer:

The urine of halal animals is not impure, therefore, if an expert physician prescribes the urine of a halal animal for treatment, there is no harm in using it.

❖ Evidences:

Narrated Anas ibn Malik (رضي الله عنه):
Some people from the tribe of ‘Ukl or ‘Uraina came, but the climate of Madinah did not suit them. The Prophet (ﷺ) instructed them to go to the camels of the treasury and drink their urine and milk. They did so and regained health.
(Sahih al-Bukhari: 233, Sahih Muslim: 1671)

Hasan ibn ‘Ubaydullah (رحمه الله) reported:
سأل الحكم بن صفوان إبراهيم عن بول البعير يصيب ثوب الرجل…

Al-Hakam ibn Safwan asked Ibrahim al-Nakha‘i (رحمه الله) about camel urine if it touches a man’s clothes. He replied: “There is no harm in it. Is not camel urine drunk and used for treatment?”
(Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah, 1/109 – authentic chain)

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (رحمه الله, 728H) said:
لست أعلم مخالفا فى جواز التداوي بأبوال الإبل، كما جاءت السنة

“I do not know of anyone who opposed the permissibility of using camel urine for treatment, as established in the Sunnah.”
(Majmu‘ al-Fatawa, 21/562)

Imam al-Hattab al-Ra‘ini al-Maliki (رحمه الله, 954H) said:
يجوز التداوي بشرب بول الأنعام بلا خلاف، وكذا بول كل ما يباح لحمه

“It is unanimously permissible to use the urine of livestock animals for treatment, and likewise the urine of any animal whose meat is halal.”
(Mawahib al-Jalil, 1/120)
