Fatāwā ‘Ilmiyyah (Tawḍīḥ al-Aḥkām), Vol. 2, p. 131

Question:

Is it proven in Sharī‘ah to say to each other “Taqabbalallahu Minna wa Mink” (May Allah accept from us and from you) after the Eid prayer?

Analysis of the Prophetic (Marfū‘) Narrations

Two marfū‘ narrations are reported on this matter:

1st Marfū‘ Narration

  • Sources: [Al-Kāmil by Ibn ‘Adī: 6/2274], [Al-Majrūḥīn by Ibn Ḥibbān: 2/301], [As-Sunan al-Kubrā by al-Bayhaqī: 3/319], [Al-‘Ilal al-Mutanāhiyah by Ibn al-Jawzī: 1/476, ḥadīth 811] — "This ḥadīth is not authentic."
  • Weakness: The narrator Muḥammad bin Ibrāhīm bin al-‘Alā’ ash-Shāmī was declared a fabricator:
    • Imām Dāraqutnī: "A liar"
    • Ibn Ḥibbān: "He fabricated ḥadīths upon the people of Shām"
    • Al-Ḥākim: "He narrated fabricated ḥadīths from al-Walīd bin Muslim and Suwayd bin ‘Abd al-‘Azīz"

2nd Marfū‘ Narration

  • Sources: [As-Sunan al-Kubrā by al-Bayhaqī: 3/319–320], [Amālī Ibn Shim‘ūn: 277], [Al-Majrūḥīn by Ibn Ḥibbān: 2/149], [Al-‘Ilal al-Mutanāhiyah: 2/57–58, ḥadīth 900] — "This ḥadīth is not authentic."
  • Weakness: Narrator ‘Abd al-Khāliq bin Zayd bin Wāqid:
    • Imām Bukhārī: "Munkar al-ḥadīth" and "I do not narrate from one whom I declare munkar al-ḥadīth"
    • The narration is also munqaṭi‘ (disconnected) between Makhḥūl and ‘Ubādah.
    • Ibn Ḥajar also graded it weak.

Authentic Reports from the Companions and Early Generations

Even though marfū‘ narrations are weak, there are authentic āthār (Companion/Tabi‘ī practices) that support the permissibility:

Practice of Abū Umāmah and Wāthilah bin al-Asqa‘ رضي الله عنهما

  • People would greet them on Eid with “Taqabbalallahu Minna wa Minkum”, and they would reply: "Wa Minkum".
  • Source: Mukhtaṣar Ikhtilāf al-Fuqahā’ by al-Ṭaḥāwī, 4/385 — Chain: ḥasan.

Statement of Jubayr bin Nufayr رحمه الله

  • The Companions would say “Taqabbalallahu Minna wa Mink” on Eid.
  • Chain: ḥasan — authenticated by Ibn Ḥajar.

Report from Ṣafwān bin ‘Amr as-Saksakī رحمه الله

  • He saw several senior Tābi‘īn using this greeting on Eid.
  • Chain: ḥasan.

Imām Mālik رحمه الله’s Statement

  • When asked, he said: "This is the practice in Madinah; we see no harm in it."
  • Chain: ḥasan.

Imām Shu‘bah bin al-Ḥajjāj رحمه الله

  • On Eid, Yūnus bin ‘Ubayd greeted him with “Taqabbalallahu Minna wa Mink”.
  • Chain: ḥasan.

Statement of al-Ṭaḥāwī رحمه الله

  • He recorded that his teachers and contemporaries would respond to Eid greetings with “Taqabbalallahu Minna wa Mink”.

Conclusion:

  • The Prophetic narrations on this matter are weak and cannot be used as proof by themselves.
  • However, authentic reports from the Companions, Tābi‘īn, and leading imāms confirm that it was a known and accepted greeting on Eid.
  • Therefore, saying “Taqabbalallahu Minna wa Mink” on Eid is permissible and based on the practice of the early generations.
