Permissibility of Reciting Short Surahs in Fajr Prayer

Ruling on Occasionally Reciting Short Surahs in Fajr Prayer

📚 Source: Fatāwā Amunpuri by Shaykh Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Amunpuri

❀ Question:

Is it permissible to occasionally recite short Surahs in the Fajr prayer?

✿ Answer:

Yes, it is permissible.

① Narration of ʿUqbah bin ʿĀmir

Sayyidunā ʿUqbah bin ʿĀmir رضي الله عنه said:

“I used to hold the reins of the Prophet’s ﷺ camel during travel. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘ʿUqbah! Shall I not teach you two of the best Surahs?’ He then taught me Sūrah al-Falaq and Sūrah al-Nās. The Prophet ﷺ noticed that I was not very cheerful after learning them. Later, he came to lead the Fajr prayer and recited these very two Surahs. After the prayer, he turned to me and asked: ‘ʿUqbah! How did you find it?’”

📚 [Sunan Abī Dāwūd: 1462, Sunan al-Nasā’ī: 5438 — Chain is ḥasan]
📝 Imām Ibn Khuzaymah رحمه الله graded this narration as Ṣaḥīḥ.
(Ṣaḥīḥ Ibn Khuzaymah, Hadith: 535)

② Prophet ﷺ Reciting Sūrah al-Zalzalah in Fajr Prayer

❀ The Prophet ﷺ recited Sūrah al-Zalzalah in both rakʿahs of Fajr prayer.

📚 [Sunan Abī Dāwūd: 816 — Chain is ḥasan]

✅ Conclusion:

It is permissible to occasionally recite short Surahs in Fajr prayer, as established by the practice of the Prophet ﷺ. However, this should be done occasionally, not as a constant habit, to maintain variety in worship — which is from the Sunnah.
