Permissibility of Marking a Grave with a Stone or Sign

✔ Permissibility of Placing a Marker on the Grave
Written by: Imran Ayyub Lahori

❖ It Is Permissible to Place a Stone or Similar Marker on a Grave

It is narrated that when Hazrat ‘Uthman bin Maz‘un (رضي الله عنه) was buried, the Prophet (ﷺ) instructed a man to bring a stone.
When the man was unable to lift it, the Prophet (ﷺ) helped him, and placed the stone at the head of the grave, then said:

أتـعـلـم بهـا قبـر أخـى وأدفن إليه من مات من أهلى
"Through this, I will recognize my brother’s grave and bury those among my family who pass away near him."

❖ Scholarly Commentary

Imam Abu Dawood (رحمه الله) established a chapter titled:
“It is permitted to gather multiple deceased persons in a single grave, and it is permitted to mark the grave.”

Imam Bayhaqi (رحمه الله) wrote a chapter:
“Marking a grave with a stone or any other kind of sign.”

Shaykh al-Albani (رحمه الله) stated that this narration has two supporting chains, making it strong in authenticity.

✔ Key Point:
It is Islamically permissible to place a stone or any identifiable marker on a grave for the purpose of recognition, as done by the Prophet (ﷺ) himself. However, such marking must remain simple and unadorned, avoiding excessive structures or decorations.
