Divorced Woman Leaving Home During ʿIddah
✍ By: Imran Ayoob Lahori
A divorced woman may leave her home during ʿiddah if there is a need, as evidenced by the hadith of Jabir (RA):
My maternal aunt was divorced. During her ʿiddah, she wanted to go out to pick dates from her palm tree. A man scolded her for doing so. She went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed him, so he said:
"Yes, go and pick your dates, for it is possible that you may give in charity or do some other act of kindness through it."
[Sahih Muslim 1483, Kitab al-Talaq, Bab Jawaz Khuruj al-Muʿtaddah; Musnad Ahmad 3/321; Sunan Abi Dawud 2297; al-Nasa’i 6/209; Ibn Majah 2034]
Conclusion:
This narration shows that a woman in ʿiddah is allowed to leave her home for genuine needs and beneficial purposes, provided Islamic guidelines are observed.
