Performing One ʿUmrah on Behalf of Both Deceased Parents

❖ Ruling on Performing a Single ʿUmrah for Both Deceased Parents

Fatwa by: Shaykh Saeed Mujtaba Saeedi ḥafiẓahullāh

❖ Question

If a person intends to perform only one ʿUmrah and wishes to dedicate its reward to both of his deceased parents, is it permissible to do so? Can a single ʿUmrah be carried out on behalf of both parents?

❖ Answer

Yes, this is permissible and falls under the category of Īṣāl al-Thawāb (conveying reward to the deceased). There is no prohibition in doing so.

A single ʿUmrah may be performed on behalf of more than one deceased individual, as long as it is done with the intention of conveying the reward to them.

This is similar to other righteous deeds such as:

  • Recitation of the Qur’an
  • Charitable donations
  • Duʿā
    — whose rewards can be intended for multiple deceased individuals.

After the completion of the ʿUmrah, one may intend to dedicate the reward to both father and mother.

✅ Summary:
A single ʿUmrah performed with the intention of Īṣāl al-Thawāb can benefit both deceased parents, and is Shariʿah-compliant.
