Number of Khutbahs in Eid Prayer: One, Not Two
Written by: Imran Ayyub Lahori
All previous authentic narrations that mention the khutbah (sermon) of Eid refer to it in the singular form, indicating that only one sermon was delivered. There is no authentic evidence proving that the Prophet ﷺ or his Companions delivered two khutbahs for Eid prayer. Therefore, the correct and established Sunnah is to deliver one khutbah only after the Eid prayer.
A narration attributed to Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ (رضي الله عنه) states:
"The Prophet ﷺ would offer the Eid prayer without Adhān or Iqāmah, and he would deliver two khutbahs while standing, separating them by sitting between them."
[Kashf al-Astār by al-Bazzār: 1/315, Ḥadīth 657]
Shaykh al-Albānī (رحمه الله) writes:
❝This narration is neither ṣaḥīḥ (authentic) nor ḥasan (good).❞
[Tamām al-Minnah, p. 348]
Using the Friday khutbah (which has two parts) as an analogy for Eid khutbahs is incorrect. In acts of worship, Qiyās (analogical reasoning) has no place unless there is supporting textual evidence, which is absent in this case.
Some may argue that the Prophet ﷺ delivering a message to the women after the Eid prayer is evidence of a second khutbah. However, this too is incorrect. Another narration clarifies:
"Then the Prophet ﷺ delivered the khutbah and, realizing the women had not heard it, went to them and advised them."
[Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 1465, Ibn Mājah: 1263]
This was not a formal second khutbah, but an extension of the first, specifically to reach the women who couldn’t hear it initially.
✔ Only one khutbah is to be delivered on the day of Eid, after the prayer.
✔ There is no authentic report establishing two khutbahs.
✔ The Sunnah is clear, and acts of worship are based solely on textual proof—not analogy or assumptions.

❖ Only One Khutbah for Eid Prayer
All previous authentic narrations that mention the khutbah (sermon) of Eid refer to it in the singular form, indicating that only one sermon was delivered. There is no authentic evidence proving that the Prophet ﷺ or his Companions delivered two khutbahs for Eid prayer. Therefore, the correct and established Sunnah is to deliver one khutbah only after the Eid prayer.
✦ A Weak Narration Cited for Two Khutbahs:
A narration attributed to Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ (رضي الله عنه) states:
"The Prophet ﷺ would offer the Eid prayer without Adhān or Iqāmah, and he would deliver two khutbahs while standing, separating them by sitting between them."
Shaykh al-Albānī (رحمه الله) writes:
❝This narration is neither ṣaḥīḥ (authentic) nor ḥasan (good).❞
✦ Refuting the Analogy with Jumuʿah:
Using the Friday khutbah (which has two parts) as an analogy for Eid khutbahs is incorrect. In acts of worship, Qiyās (analogical reasoning) has no place unless there is supporting textual evidence, which is absent in this case.
✦ Misinterpretation of the Women’s Khutbah:
Some may argue that the Prophet ﷺ delivering a message to the women after the Eid prayer is evidence of a second khutbah. However, this too is incorrect. Another narration clarifies:
"Then the Prophet ﷺ delivered the khutbah and, realizing the women had not heard it, went to them and advised them."
This was not a formal second khutbah, but an extension of the first, specifically to reach the women who couldn’t hear it initially.
Conclusion:
✔ Only one khutbah is to be delivered on the day of Eid, after the prayer.
✔ There is no authentic report establishing two khutbahs.
✔ The Sunnah is clear, and acts of worship are based solely on textual proof—not analogy or assumptions.
