On the Day of Judgment: Will People Be Called by Their Mother’s Name or Father’s Name?

Question:
On the Day of Judgment, will people be called by the name of their mother or their father?
Answer:
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd!
Allah Almighty says:
﴿یَوْمَ نَدْعُوْا كُلَّ أُنَاسٍ بِإِمَامِہِمْ فَمَنْ أُوْتِیَ كِتَابَہٗ بِیَمِیْنِہٖ فَأُوْلٰٓئِکَ یَقْرَءُوْنَ كِتَابَہُمْ وَلَا یُظْلَمُوْنَ فَتِیْلاً﴾
(al-Isrāʾ: 71)
“On the Day We will call every people with their record of deeds. So whoever is given his record in his right hand — they will read their record, and they will not be wronged even as much as a thread.”
From this verse, it is clear that people will be called with their records of deeds on the Day of Judgment.
It is recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari:
عَنِ النَّبِیِّ ﷺ قَالَ: إِنَّ الْغَادِرَ یُرْفَعُ لَہُ لِوَاءٌ یَوْمَ الْقِیَامَۃِ، یُقَالُ: هٰذِہِ غَدْرَۃُ فُلَانِ بْنِ فُلَانٍ
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“A flag will be raised for the betrayer on the Day of Judgment, and it will be said: This is the betrayal of so-and-so, son of so-and-so.”
Imam Bukhari رحمه الله placed this hadith under the chapter:
بَابُ مَا یُدْعٰی النَّاسُ بِاٰبَائِہِمْ
“Chapter: People will be called by the names of their fathers on the Day of Judgment.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitāb al-Adab, Hadith 6177)
✿ According to the Qur’an: People will be called with their records of deeds.
✿ According to Hadith: People will also be called by the name of their father.
Hādhā mā ʿindī wallāhu aʿlam bis-ṣawāb.

Qur’anic Evidence

Prophetic Hadith Explanation
