Obligatory Recitation of Surah Al-Fatiha in Salah and Its Prescribed Manner

✦ Recitation of Surah Al-Fatiha​

Qur'anic Verses (Surah Al-Fatiha):
بِسْمِ اللَّـهِ الرَّحْمَـٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ ﴿١﴾
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّـهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ ﴿٢﴾
الرَّحْمَـٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ ﴿٣﴾
مَالِكِ يَوْمِ الدِّينِ ﴿٤﴾
إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ ﴿٥﴾
اهْدِنَا الصِّرَاطَ الْمُسْتَقِيمَ ﴿٦﴾
صِرَاطَ الَّذِينَ أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ غَيْرِ الْمَغْضُوبِ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا الضَّالِّينَ ﴿٧﴾


Translation:
"In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds.
The Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Master of the Day of Judgement.
You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help.
Guide us to the Straight Path –
The path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor, not of those who have evoked Your anger or who have gone astray."

✦ Manner of Reciting Surah Al-Fatiha in Salah​

◉ Recitation of Bismillah:
Narrated by Sayyiduna Anas رضي الله عنه:


"I offered Salah behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Abu Bakr, Umar, and Uthman رضي الله عنهم. They used to begin the recitation with:
(الْحَمْدُ لِلَّـهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ),
and they would not recite aloud:
(بِسْمِ اللَّـهِ الرَّحْمَـٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ)
before or after it."
(Bukhari: 734, Muslim: 399)


Further,


"The Prophet ﷺ used to recite
(بِسْمِ اللَّـهِ الرَّحْمَـٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ)
in a low voice."
(Ibn Khuzaymah: 594)

✦ Obligation of Reciting Surah Al-Fatiha in Salah​

✔ Hadith: “No Salah without Surah Al-Fatiha”
Sayyiduna Ubadah ibn Samit رضي الله عنه reported:


"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
‘Whoever does not recite Surah Al-Fatiha in his prayer, his prayer is invalid.’"
(Bukhari: 756, Muslim: 394)


Imam Bukhari رحمه الله titled this Hadith with the heading:


"Reciting Surah Al-Fatiha in Salah is obligatory for every individual – whether he is the Imam, follower (Muqtadi), resident, or traveler, in both silent and loud prayers."

✦ Reciting Surah Al-Fatiha Behind the Imam​

✔ Hadith: Clarification from the Prophet ﷺ
Sayyiduna Ubadah ibn Samit رضي الله عنه also narrated:


"We were praying Fajr behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he experienced difficulty in reciting the Qur'an. When the Salah ended, he said:
‘Perhaps you are reciting behind the Imam?’
We replied: Yes, O Messenger of Allah!
He said:
‘Do not recite anything except Surah Al-Fatiha, for there is no prayer for the one who does not recite it.’"
(Abu Dawood: 823, Tirmidhi: 311)
This Hadith has been authenticated by Ibn Khuzaymah, Ibn Hibban, and Al-Bayhaqi, and deemed Hasan by Imam Tirmidhi.


✔ Hadith: Prayer is Incomplete Without Surah Al-Fatiha
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه reported:


"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
‘Whoever prays and does not recite Surah Al-Fatiha in it, his prayer is deficient, deficient, not complete.’
He was asked: ‘Even behind an Imam?’
He replied: ‘Yes, recite it in your heart.’"
(Muslim: 395)


✔ Hadith: Emphasis on Silent Recitation of Surah Al-Fatiha
Sayyiduna Anas رضي الله عنه said:


"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ led his companions in prayer. When the prayer ended, he turned towards them and said:
‘Do you recite while the Imam is reciting?’
They remained silent.
He asked three times.
Then they said: Yes, we do.
He ﷺ said:
‘Do not do so. Only recite Surah Al-Fatiha silently in your heart.’"
(Ibn Hibban 5/251, Al-Bayhaqi 2/661)
Imam Haythami in Majma’ al-Zawa’id confirmed all narrators are trustworthy, and Ibn Hajar graded it as Hasan.

✦ Conclusion​

Based on the aforementioned narrations:


❖ Surah Al-Fatiha is an essential and obligatory part of Salah.
❖ A follower (Muqtadi) must recite it silently in his heart behind the Imam, whether the prayer is loud or silent.
❖ Reciting “Bismillah” aloud is not established from the practice of the Prophet ﷺ or the Rightly Guided Caliphs; rather, it was recited quietly.
