How many sermons (khutbah) are there on Eid?
Answer:
The Eid khutbah is Sunnah, but there is no explicit proof from the Prophet ﷺ or the Companions regarding a second khutbah. However, delivering two khutbahs on Eid, similar to Jumu‘ah, is permissible.
There are several narrations regarding this issue, but all of them are weak. For instance:
Ubaydullah bin Abdullah bin Utbah (رحمه الله) states:
"The Sunnah is that the Imam should deliver two sermons (khutbahs) on Eid, separating them with a brief sitting."
[Al-Sunan al-Kubra by Al-Bayhaqi, 3/299]
This narration is severely weak due to the following reasons:
➊ Ibrahim bin Muhammad bin Abi Yahya Aslami Madani is deemed weak by the majority of hadith scholars.
➋ The narration is mursal (disconnected).
Hafiz An-Nawawi (رحمه الله) [631-676 AH] writes:
"This narration is weak and disconnected. Nothing authentic is established in this regard. The reliable approach is to follow the analogy of Jumu‘ah and deliver two khutbahs."
[Khulasat al-Ahkam, 2/838]
Some scholars hold the opinion that there are two khutbahs for Eid, making it permissible to deliver two khutbahs on Eid just like Jumu‘ah. However, there is no explicit evidence from the Prophet ﷺ or the Companions proving two khutbahs on Eid.
