Question
How should one make the intention (niyyah) for Jumu‘ah prayer, and what are the Sunnah prayers before and after it?
Answer
Praise be to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah.
General Principle of Intention
◈ Whether it is Jumu‘ah prayer, a fard (obligatory) prayer, or any sunnah or nafl prayer, the principle of intention is the same: it is an act of the heart.
◈ Intention is a matter of the heart; there is no evidence from the Qur’an or Sunnah that it must be verbalized.
◈ Whenever you are about to pray, make the conscious determination in your heart of which prayer you are going to perform.
Practice of the Prophet ﷺ
◈ The Prophet ﷺ never verbalized his intention.
◈ His practice was to have the intention in the heart before the prayer.
◈ This internal determination alone constitutes the niyyah, and following it is the Sunnah.
Modern Unverified Practices
◈ Today, many recite long verbal niyyahs in Urdu, Punjabi, or other languages, such as:
"I intend to pray two rak‘ahs of Jumu‘ah prayer for Allah, facing the Ka‘bah, behind this Imam, Allahu Akbar."
◈ This method has no basis from the Prophet ﷺ or the Companions (RA).
Sunnah Method
◈ When you are about to pray Jumu‘ah, make the intention in your heart:
"I am going to pray Jumu‘ah."
◈ This is sufficient, complete, and in accordance with the Sunnah.
This is what I hold to be correct, and Allah knows best.
