⫷ Misleading Poetry and Clarification on the Doctrine of Waḥdat al-Wujūd ⫸
Is it permissible to recite the following couplet?
"Manẓar fazā-i-dahr mein sārā ʿAlī kā hai
Jis simt dekhtā hoon naẓārah ʿAlī kā hai"
("The entire scene of this universe belongs to ʿAlī; wherever I look, it is the vision of ʿAlī.")
This couplet reflects the beliefs of certain Ṣūfī sects, particularly pointing towards the doctrines of Waḥdat al-Wujūd (Unity of Existence) and Ḥulūliyyah (Indwelling of the Divine)—both of which contradict the core principles of Islamic creed.
Waḥdat al-Wujūd claims that the Creator and creation are one and the same—a belief that is:
✘ Theologically deviant
✘ In contradiction to Tawḥīd (Islamic monotheism)
✘ Rejected by mainstream scholars of Ahl al-Sunnah
Such statements are impermissible in Islam as they conflict with the fundamental tenets of Tawḥīd.
✔ The distinction between Allah (the Creator) and His creation is a core belief in Islam.
✔ Ascribing divine qualities or omnipresence to any creation—be it ʿAlī (RA) or others—is not allowed.
✘ The cited couplet is not permissible in Islamic belief, as it promotes misguided Ṣūfī concepts.
✔ Muslims must avoid expressions that contradict the principles of Tawḥīd and instead adhere to the authentic teachings of the Qur’an and Sunnah.
