Ḥadīth Evidence

From Ibn ʿAbbās (رضي الله عنهما):
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to al-ʿAbbās bin ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib (رضي الله عنه):
*"O ʿAbbās! O my uncle! Shall I not give you something? Shall I not grant you? Shall I not bestow upon you? Shall I not give you ten virtues? When you do this, Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, will forgive for you your earlier and later sins, old and new, those done in error and those done deliberately, the small and the large, the hidden and the apparent.

Ten virtues: You pray four rakʿahs, reciting in each rakʿah Sūrat al-Fātiḥah and another sūrah. When you finish the recitation in the first rakʿah while standing, say fifteen times:
Subḥān Allāh, wal-ḥamdu lillāh, wa lā ilāha illallāh, wallāhu akbar.

Then bow (rukūʿ) and, after completing the rukūʿ glorifications, say these words ten times. Then rise from rukūʿ and, after completing Samiʿa Allāhu liman ḥamidah and so on, say them ten times. Then go into sujūd and, after the prostration glorifications, say them ten times. Then rise from sujūd into the sitting position and say them ten times. Then go into the second sujūd and say them ten times. Then rise from that sujūd into the sitting position (before standing for the next rakʿah) and say them ten times.

This makes seventy-five (75) tasbīḥāt in each rakʿah. Do this in all four rakʿahs. If you are able to pray it every day, then do so. If not, then once a week. If you cannot, then once a month. If you cannot, then once a year. If you cannot, then at least once in your lifetime."*
[Sunan Abī Dāwūd: 1/191, Ḥadīth 1297]

  • Its chain is ḥasan. It has been declared ṣaḥīḥ by Abū Bakr al-Ājurrī, Abū al-Ḥasan al-Maqdisī, Abū Dāwūd, and others. [al-Targhīb wa al-Tarhīb: 1/468]

Rulings and Notes

① This prayer consists of four rakʿahs, each containing 75 tasbīḥāt, totalling 300 tasbīḥāt in the entire prayer.

② It is not established to pray this in congregation; therefore, it should be prayed individually.

③ The preferred frequency is daily, but if not possible, then weekly, monthly, yearly, or at least once in a lifetime.

④ The tasbīḥ phrase is:
سُبْحَانَ اللّٰهِ، وَالْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ، وَلَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰهُ، وَاللّٰهُ أَكْبَرُ
