Meaning of People’s Āmīn Coinciding with the Angels’ Āmīn and Its Recognition
(Excerpt from the book “Namaz Main Unchi Āwaz se Āmīn Kehna” by Muhammad Muzaffar Shirazi, translated by Hafiz Abdul Razzaq Azhar)
◈ Scholarly Opinions on the Meaning of Āmīn Coinciding with the Angels
① Imām Ibn Ḥibbān (رحمه الله):
The angels say Āmīn with complete sincerity, free from ostentation, fame, pride, or arrogance.
When a believer also says Āmīn purely for Allah’s pleasure, his sincerity matches that of the angels, and his past sins are forgiven.
[al-Ṣaḥīḥ ma‘ al-Iḥsān 5/108]
② Imām al-Nawawī (رحمه الله):
The intended meaning is synchronization in timing — the worshipper says Āmīn at the same moment as the angels.
Qāḍī ‘Iyāḍ added: If one’s sincerity, humility, and devotion in saying Āmīn match the angels, forgiveness is granted.
[Sharḥ Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 4/130]
③ Imām Ibn Daqīq al-‘Īd (رحمه الله):
The apparent meaning is synchronization in time, supported by the Hadith:
«إذا قال أحدكم آمين قالت الملائكة فى السماء آمين فوافقت إحداهما الأخرى»
“When one of you says Āmīn and the angels in the heavens say Āmīn, if the two coincide, forgiveness is granted.”
He added: There is also a possibility of matching in qualities of sincerity and devotion, but the timing interpretation is stronger.
[Aḥkām al-Aḥkām 1/208]
④ Imām Ibn ‘Abd al-Barr (رحمه الله):
He mentioned several possible meanings:
- Āmīn said with sincerity and attentiveness matches the angels’ Āmīn.
- Or it encourages making du‘ā for all believers, just as the angels do.
- Or it refers to the angels who attend prayers, saying Āmīn when the reciter finishes walā al-ḍāllīn. Whoever says Āmīn along with them receives forgiveness.
[al-Tamhīd 7/15-16]
⑤ Imām al-Zurqānī (رحمه الله):
The meaning is that the angels say Āmīn, and whoever’s Āmīn coincides with theirs in wording and timing will have sins forgiven.
[Sharḥ al-Zurqānī ‘ala al-Muwaṭṭa’ 1/260]
⑥ Imām al-‘Irāqī (رحمه الله):
The strongest opinion is synchronization in timing — the angels and worshippers saying Āmīn at the same moment.
[Ṭarḥ al-Tathrīb 2/266]
⑦ Imām al-Qurṭubī (رحمه الله):
Different views:
- Matching in acceptance.
- Matching in timing.
- Matching in sincerity.
[al-Jāmi‘ li-Aḥkām al-Qur’ān 1/89]
⑧ Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Kathīr (رحمه الله):
He also mentioned three views:
- Synchronization in timing.
- Matching in acceptance.
- Matching in sincerity.
[Tafsīr Ibn Kathīr 1/33]
⑨ Imām Ibn al-Munīr (رحمه الله):
The wisdom behind synchronization with the angels is to instill attentiveness and alertness in believers, since the angels are never negligent.
[Fatḥ al-Bārī 2/265, Sharḥ al-Zurqānī 1/260]
⑩ Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar (رحمه الله):
The meaning is synchronization in wording and timing, not just sincerity as Ibn Ḥibbān suggested.
[Fatḥ al-Bārī 2/265]
⑪ Mubārakpūrī (رحمه الله):
He agreed that the meaning is synchronization in wording and timing.
[Tuḥfat al-Aḥwadhī 1/212]
◈ The Strongest Opinion (Rājiḥ Qawl)
The most correct view is that the intended meaning of people’s Āmīn coinciding with the angels’ Āmīn is:
- Agreement in wording (qawl).
- Agreement in timing (zamān).
Because ruling according to the apparent (ẓāhir) meaning is easier and clearer than ruling according to hidden inner states like sincerity, which are difficult to judge.
Thus, the preferred interpretation is synchronization in wording and timing with the angels’ Āmīn. والله أعلم.
