عن ثوبان قال : بعث رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم سرية۔۔۔ أمرهم أن يمسحوا على العصائب و التساخين ❀
"Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) sent a group of warriors and instructed them to wipe over their turbans and the things that keep their feet warm (socks and shoes).
" [Sunan Abi Dawood: vol. 1, p. 21, Hadith 146]
The chain of this narration is authentic. Both Imam Hakim and Imam Dhahabi have declared it authentic. [Al-Mustadrak and Al-Talkhis: vol. 1, p. 169, Hadith 602]For a response to Imam Ahmad’s criticism, see Nasb al-Rayah [vol. 1, p. 165] and others.
Imam Abu Dawood states that the following Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) wiped over their socks:
"Ali ibn Abi Talib, Abu Mas’ood (Ibn Mas’ood), Bara ibn Azib, Anas ibn Malik, Abu Umamah, Sahl ibn Sa’d, and others (may Allah be pleased with them)."
[Sunan Abi Dawood: vol. 1, p. 24, before Hadith 160]
Imam Abu Dawood al-Sijistani (may Allah have mercy on him) states:
"Ali ibn Abi Talib, Abu Mas’ood (Ibn Mas’ood), Bara ibn Azib, Anas ibn Malik, Abu Umamah, Sahl ibn Sa’d, and Amr ibn Hurayth wiped over their socks. This is also narrated from Umar ibn Khattab and Ibn Abbas."
(may Allah be pleased with them all) [Sunan Abi Dawood: vol. 1, p. 24, Hadith 159]
The sayings of the Companions are also recorded in Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah [vol. 1, pp. 188-189], Musannaf Abdur Razzaq [vol. 1, pp. 199-200], Al-Muhalla by Ibn Hazm [vol. 2, p. 84], and Al-Kina by Al-Dulabi [vol. 1, p. 181], among others. The narration of Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) is recorded in Al-Awsat by Ibn al-Mundhir [vol. 1, p. 462] with an authentic chain, as will be shown later.
Imam Ibn Qudamah states:
"The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) wiped over the socks and no one opposed them during their time, which indicates a consensus."
[Al-Mughni: vol. 1, p. 181, Issue 426]
There are also elevated (marfu) narrations supporting this consensus of the Companions. For instance, see [Al-Mustadrak: vol. 1, p. 169, Hadith 602].
Wiping over the Khuff (leather socks) is established through mutawatir (widely transmitted) Ahadith. Socks (Juraabain) are a type of Khuff as narrated from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), Ibrahim al-Nakhai, and Nafi’ and others. Those who deny wiping over socks do not have any explicit evidence from the Quran, Hadith, or consensus.
Supporting Narrations:
Imam Ibn al-Mundhir al-Naysaburi (may Allah have mercy on him) stated:"Muhammad ibn Abdulwahhab narrated to us: Ja’far ibn Awn narrated to us:
Yazid ibn Mardanabah narrated to us: Al-Waleed ibn Sari’ narrated to us from Amr ibn Hurayth who said: I saw Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) urinate, then perform Wudu and wipe over the socks."
[Al-Awsat: vol. 1, p. 462, and its chain is authentic]
Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) wiped over the socks.
[Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah: vol. 1, p. 188, Hadith 1979, and its chain is Hasan]
Bara ibn Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) wiped over the socks.
[Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah: vol. 1, p. 189, Hadith 1984, and its chain is authentic]
Uqbah ibn Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) wiped over the socks.
[Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah: vol. 1, p. 189, Hadith 1987, and its chain is authentic]
Sahl ibn Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) wiped over the socks.
[Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah: vol. 1, p. 189, Hadith 1990, and its chain is Hasan]
◈ Ibn al-Mundhir stated: "Imam Ishaq ibn Rahwayh said that the Companions did not differ on this issue."
[Al-Awsat by Ibn al-Mundhir: vol. 1, pp. 464-465]
◈ Ibn Hazm also mentioned similar points.
[Al-Muhalla: vol. 2, p. 86, Issue 212]
◈ Ibn Qudamah stated: "There is a consensus among the Companions on this matter."
[Al-Mughni: vol. 1, p. 181, Issue 426]
? It is clear that there is a consensus among the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them all) on the permissibility of wiping over socks, and consensus (Ijma’) is a legal proof. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Allah will never unite my Ummah upon misguidance." [Al-Mustadrak by Hakim: vol. 1, pp. 116, Hadith 397-398] Also see: [Ibraa Ahl al-Hadith wal-Quran from accusations of Tuhmah wal-Buhtan, p. 32, by Hafiz Abdullah Muhaddith Ghazi Puri (d. 1337H), a student of Sayyid Nazeer Hussain Muhaddith Dehlavi (may Allah have mercy on them both)]
Additional Information:
◈ Ibrahim al-Nakhai (may Allah have mercy on him) wiped over the socks.
[Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah: vol. 1, p. 188, Hadith 1977, and its chain is authentic]
◈ Saeed ibn Jubayr (may Allah have mercy on him) wiped over the socks.
[Also: vol. 1, p. 189, Hadith 1989, and its chain is authentic]
◈ Ata ibn Abi Rabah believed in wiping over the socks.
[Al-Muhalla: vol. 2, p. 86]
? It is evident that the Tabi’een also had a consensus on the permissibility of wiping over socks. Alhamdulillah (All praise is due to Allah).
