Marrying into Deviant Sects: A Grave Sin in Islamic Law

Source: Fatāwā Muḥammadiyyah, Vol. 1, p. 721

❖ Question:

In our village, there is an ongoing campaign against the scholars. Most of the people here play musical bands during weddings and engage in marital relations with Barelvis (giving and taking in marriage).

What is the Islamic ruling regarding such Ahl al-Ḥadīth individuals who participate in these actions?
“Fatabayyanū, Tujarū” (Investigate, and you will be rewarded.)

❖ Answer:

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, Ammā Baʿd!

If a person holds polytheistic (shirk-related) beliefs, then such an individual is not considered a suitable match (kufw) for a woman of pure monotheistic (tawḥīd-based) faith.

✦ Evidence from the Qur’ān:

Arabic:
﴿أَفَمَن كَانَ مُؤْمِنًا كَمَن كَانَ فَاسِقًا ۚ﴾
Surah al-Sajdah (32:18)

Translation:

“Is the one who is a believer like the one who is defiantly disobedient? They are not equal.”

❖ Ruling:

◈ Therefore, marrying into such families is against Sharīʿah.
◈ It is considered a major sin (kabīrah).
◈ One must immediately abandon such sinful practices.

If not, the responsibility for any children born with shirk-based or deviant beliefs will lie squarely on those who initiated and engaged in such marriages.
