Marriage Ruling: Can a Man Marry His Milk-Niece in Islam?

❖ Source:

Fatāwā Amunpuri by Shaykh Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Amunpuri

❖ Question:

If someone has been breastfed by his maternal grandmother (nānī), is it permissible for him to marry his maternal aunt’s daughter (khālah’s daughter)?

✿ Answer:

No, such a marriage is not permissible.
The man and the maternal aunt’s daughter become milk-uncle and milk-niece (raḍāʿī māmū-bhānjī) to each other.
Just as a biological maternal uncle cannot marry his niece, likewise, a milk-uncle cannot marry his milk-niece.

This is because in Islamic jurisprudence:

“Whatever relationship is prohibited due to lineage (nasab) is also prohibited due to breastfeeding (raḍāʿah).”

❖ Quranic Evidence:

وَبَنَاتُ الْأُخْتِ
﴿النساء: 23﴾

Translation:

“And (prohibited to you are) the daughters of your sisters...”
[Surah An-Nisā’: 23]

This includes both biological and milk-nieces.

✅ Summary:

  • A man who has drunk his nānī’s milk becomes a milk-brother to her children, including his khālah.
  • As a result, the khālah’s daughter becomes his milk-niece, making nikāḥ with her forbidden.
  • Milk relations carry the same marriage prohibitions as blood relations.
