Love for Sayyidina Zubair ibn al-Awwam

Sayyidina Zubair ibn al-Awwam ibn Khuwailid (رضی اللہ عنہ) was a devoted companion (Hawari) of the Holy Prophet (ﷺ), son of his paternal aunt Safiyyah bint Abdul Muttalib (رضی اللہ عنہا), and one of the ten promised Paradise (Ashara Mubashara).

The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) stated:

“Indeed, every Prophet has a disciple, and my disciple is Zubair ibn al-Awwam.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari: 2826, Sahih Muslim: 2415)

Sayyidina Abdullah ibn Abbas (رضی اللہ عنہ) said:

"His father (Abdullah ibn al-Zubair) was a disciple of the Prophet (ﷺ)."

(Sahih al-Bukhari: 4665)

Sufyan ibn 'Uyainah explained that Hawari means helper (Nasir).

(Sunan al-Tirmidhi: 3744, and its chain is authentic)

On the day of Banu Qurayza, the Prophet (ﷺ) said to Zubair

"May my parents be sacrificed for you."

(Sahih al-Bukhari: 3720, Sahih Muslim: 2416)

Sayyidina Umar (رضی اللہ عنہ) said:

"I find no one more deserving of this matter (caliphate) than these people, those who the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was pleased with until his death."

He named Ali, Uthman, Zubair, Talha, Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas, and Abdur Rahman ibn Awf

(Sahih al-Bukhari: 3700)

Sayyidina Uthman (رضی اللہ عنہ) said:

"By the One in whose hand is my soul, indeed he (Zubair) is the best of them as I know, and he was the most beloved to the Prophet (ﷺ)."

(Sahih al-Bukhari: 3717)

Allah, the Most Gracious, states:

اَلَّذِیۡنَ اسۡتَجَابُوۡا لِلّٰہِ وَ الرَّسُوۡلِ مِنۡۢ بَعۡدِ مَاۤ اَصَابَہُمُ الۡقَرۡحُ ؕۛ لِلَّذِیۡنَ اَحۡسَنُوۡا مِنۡہُمۡ وَ اتَّقَوۡا اَجۡرٌ عَظِیۡمٌ

"Those who responded to Allah and the Messenger after injury had struck them. For those who did good among them and feared Allah is a great reward."

(Al-Imran: 172)

Regarding this verse, Sayyidah Aisha (رضی اللہ عنہا) told her nephew Urwah ibn al-Zubair (رحمہ اللہ):

"By Allah, both your parents (father Zubair and grandfather Abu Bakr) were among those who responded to Allah and the Messenger after being hurt."

(Sahih Muslim: 2418, Darussalam numbering: 6249)

The Prophet (ﷺ) said:

"Zubair (ibn al-Awwam) is in Paradise."

(Sunan al-Tirmidhi: 3747, and its chain is authentic, Hadith: 19 p. 56)

In another narration, the Prophet (ﷺ) referred to Sayyidina Zubair (رضی اللہ عنہ) as a martyr.

(Sahih Muslim: 2417, Hadith: 19 p. 56)

During the Battle of the Camel, Sayyidina Zubair (رضی اللہ عنہ) was in the army against Sayyidina Ali (رضی اللہ عنہ). Sayyidina Abdullah ibn Abbas (رضی اللہ عنہ) approached him and said: "Are you fighting Ali ibn Abi Talib with your sword while your mother is Safiyyah bint Abdul Muttalib?" On hearing this, Zubair (رضی اللہ عنہ) left the battlefield. On his way back, Ibn Jurmuz met him and deceitfully martyred him. After his martyrdom, Abdullah ibn Abbas went to Ali (رضی اللہ عنہ) and asked:

"Where will the killer of Safiyyah's son (Zubair) go?" Ali (رضی اللہ عنہ) replied: "To the (Hell) fire."

(Tabaqat Ibn Sa'd 3/110, and its chain is Hasan)

Zar bin Hubaish (رحمہ اللہ) narrated that he was with Sayyidina Ali (رضی اللہ عنہ) when Ibn Jurmuz, the killer of Zubair (رضی اللہ عنہ), sought permission to enter. Ali (رضی اللہ عنہ) said:

"Give the 'good news' of fire to the killer of Safiyyah's son."

I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saying:

"Every Prophet has a disciple, and my disciple is Zubair."

(Musnad Ahmad 1/89, Hadith 680, and its chain is Hasan)

Al-Hakim declared this narration as authentic.

(Al-Mustadrak 3/367, Hadith 5579)

Sayyidina Ali (رضی اللہ عنہ) stated:

"I hope that I, Talha, and Zubair (ibn al-Awwam) are among those about whom Allah said: 'And We will remove whatever is in their breasts of resentment, [so they will be] brothers, on thrones facing each other.'

(Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 15/281, Hadith 37810, and its chain is Hasan)

Sayyidina Zubair (رضی اللہ عنہ) embraced Islam during his childhood and was martyred while returning from the Battle of the Camel in 36 Hijri.

According to the numbering of Tuhfat al-Ashraf, more than twenty Hadiths narrated by him are found in the six books of Hadith. One of the most famous Hadiths narrated by him is as follows:

Sayyidina Zubair (رضی اللہ عنہ) reported that he heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saying:

"Whoever lies about me deliberately, let him take his seat in Hellfire."

(Sahih al-Bukhari: 107)

O Allah, fill our hearts with the love of Sayyidina Zubair (رضی اللہ عنہ) and all the honorable companions (رضی اللہ عنہم).
