Life of Hazrat Bilal (رضي الله عنه): Simplicity in Food and Clothing

Source: Fatawa ‘Ulama-e-Hadith, Kitab al-Salah, Volume 1, Page 170

❀ Question:

How did Hazrat Bilal (رضي الله عنه), the Mu’adhdhin of Masjid al-Nabawi, manage his food and clothing?

✔ Ruling:

Hazrat Bilal (رضي الله عنه) was among the close companions of the Prophet ﷺ and served as the Mu’adhdhin of Masjid al-Nabawi. His life was marked by great simplicity and contentment.

He was appointed as the treasurer of the Bayt al-Mal, as mentioned by Imam Ibn al-Jawzi in Talqih Fuhum al-Athar:

"وَكَانَ خَازِنًا عَلَى بَيْتِ مَالِهِ"
(Translation: He was the treasurer of the Prophet’s ﷺ Bayt al-Mal.)

Due to this position, Hazrat Bilal (رضي الله عنه) was provided for his needs from the Bayt al-Mal, but he did not receive any separate payment for giving the Adhan.

His food and clothing were modest, and his needs were met through this communal fund in a manner that reflected asceticism and piety.

❀ Summary:

◈ Hazrat Bilal’s (رضي الله عنه) food and clothing were simple and based on contentment.
◈ He was provided necessary support from the Bayt al-Mal as a treasurer, not as a paid Mu’adhdhin.
