He was appointed as the treasurer of the Bayt al-Mal, as mentioned by Imam Ibn al-Jawzi in Talqih Fuhum al-Athar:
"وَكَانَ خَازِنًا عَلَى بَيْتِ مَالِهِ"
(Translation: He was the treasurer of the Prophet’s ﷺ Bayt al-Mal.)
Due to this position, Hazrat Bilal (رضي الله عنه) was provided for his needs from the Bayt al-Mal, but he did not receive any separate payment for giving the Adhan.
His food and clothing were modest, and his needs were met through this communal fund in a manner that reflected asceticism and piety.
