Keeping a Knife or Iron Object Near Children for Protection from Jinn

Written by: Sheikh Mubashir Ahmad Rabbani (May Allah protect him)

Question:
Is it permissible to place a knife or an iron object near children to protect them from jinn?

Answer:
Practically, this is incorrect, and there is no sound basis for it in Shariah. The proper Islamic method to protect children from the harm of Satan is to perform ruqyah (spiritual healing), as the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to perform for Hasan and Husayn (may Allah be pleased with them).

In Sahih Bukhari, it is mentioned that for ruqyah, the Prophet (peace be upon him) would say:

"I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from every devil, every poisonous pest, and every harmful eye."

[Sahih Bukhari, Kitab Ahadith al-Anbiya, Chapter: The saying of Allah: "And Allah took Ibrahim as His friend" (Hadith: 3371)]

One should instead make du'a (supplication) to Allah for the protection of children. Placing a knife, dagger, or any iron object near children with the belief that it will protect them from the tricks of Satan is not permissible. May Allah grant us the ability to follow the correct practices. Ameen!
