Islamic Rulings on Hair Removal and Eyebrow Shaping for Women

❀ Ruling on Hair Removal for Women ❀
This ruling is taken from the book “500 Questions and Answers for Women,” based on the fatwas of the Scholars of the Ḥaramayn, translated by Ḥāfiẓ ʿAbdullāh Salīm.

❖ Question:

What is the Sharʿī ruling regarding the following matters:

① Removing armpit and pubic hair.
② Women removing hair from legs and arms.
③ Removing eyebrows upon the husband's request.

❖ Answer:

① Removing Armpit and Pubic Hair:

It is Sunnah to remove these hairs.
Plucking the armpit hair is preferable.
Shaving the pubic hair is preferable.
However, any method of removal is permissible.

② Hair Removal from Legs and Arms:

There is no harm in women removing hair from their legs and arms.
We do not see any issue in this practice.

③ Removing Eyebrows at Husband’s Request:

It is not permissible for a woman to remove her eyebrows even if requested by her husband.
This is because the Prophet ﷺ cursed both:

«النامصة والمتنمصة»
"The woman who plucks eyebrows and the one who asks for them to be plucked."

Here, “Nams” refers specifically to removing the eyebrow hair, which is prohibited.
