What is the Islamic ruling regarding the yellow-colored discharge that starts two days before menstruation?
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd!
If yellow-colored discharge appears before menstruation, its ruling is explained in the light of the following aḥādīth:
In Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Umm ʿAṭiyyah رضي الله عنها said:
«كُنَّا لَا نَعُدُّ الصُّفْرَةَ وَالْكُدْرَةَ شَيْئًا»
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Kitāb al-Ḥayḍ, Bāb al-Ṣufrah wa-l-Kudrah fī Ghayr Ayyām al-Ḥayḍ, ḥadīth 326)
Translation:
“We did not consider yellow or brownish discharge to be anything (outside the days of menstruation).”
In Sunan Abī Dāwūd, the same meaning is stated more explicitly:
«كُنَّا لَا نَعُدُّ الصُّفْرَةَ وَالْكُدْرَةَ بَعْدَ الطُّهْرِ شَيْئًا»
(Sunan Abī Dāwūd, Kitāb al-Ṭahārah, Bāb fī al-Mar’ah Tarā al-Kudrah wa-l-Ṣufrah Baʿd al-Ṭuhr, ḥadīth 307)
Translation:
“After purity, we did not consider yellow or brownish discharge to be anything.”
◈ If this yellow discharge appears before the start of menstruation and stops when menstruation begins, then this yellow discharge is not considered part of menstruation (ḥayḍ), and the rulings of menstruation do not apply to it.
◈ However, if the woman knows that this yellow discharge is a sign of the imminent arrival of menstruation — meaning it is a prelude to ḥayḍ — then it will take the ruling of menstruation. In such a case, the woman should refrain from prayer and other acts prohibited during menstruation until she becomes pure.
