Sharʿi Ruling on Urinating Naked in Wudu Areas
(Source: Fatawa Arkan al-Islam)
What is the ruling on urinating in wudu areas while being naked, especially if others can see?
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd!
In Islam, it is not permissible to be naked in a place where one’s ʿawrah (private parts) is visible to those who are not allowed to see it.
If a person urinates in a wudu-designated area in such a way that others can see their nakedness, this is sinful.
The scholars have ruled:
It is impermissible for a person to expose their private parts in front of others for the purpose of istinjāʾ.
Instead, one should find a private place and cleanse themselves while maintaining modesty and the protection of the ʿawrah.

❖ Question
What is the ruling on urinating in wudu areas while being naked, especially if others can see?
❖ Answer
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd!
Ruling on Being Naked
In Islam, it is not permissible to be naked in a place where one’s ʿawrah (private parts) is visible to those who are not allowed to see it.
If a person urinates in a wudu-designated area in such a way that others can see their nakedness, this is sinful.
Position of the Fuqahāʾ (Jurists)
The scholars have ruled:
- If a place is such that, due to nakedness, others can see the person, then using stones (or similar materials) for cleansing becomes obligatory instead of performing istinjāʾ in that location.
- One should go to a private place where no one can see them, and use stones, tissues, or any other Sharʿi-acceptable means for purification.
- The cleansing should be done at least three times or more until all traces of impurity are removed and the area is purified.
Reason for Obligation
- Revealing the ʿawrah in front of people is ḥarām.
- When avoiding a prohibited act requires doing a certain permissible act, that act becomes wājib (obligatory).
Conclusion
It is impermissible for a person to expose their private parts in front of others for the purpose of istinjāʾ.
Instead, one should find a private place and cleanse themselves while maintaining modesty and the protection of the ʿawrah.
