Islamic Ruling on Phone and Message Contact with Non-Mahram Classmates for Educational Purposes

Source: Fatawa Ilmiyyah (Tawdih al-Ahkam)

❖ Question:

If a male and female classmate exchange phone numbers and their only intention is to assist each other in educational matters, is it Islamically permissible for them to exchange text messages on this basis?

❖ Answer:

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh. Ammā baʿd!

❖ Foundational Guidance:

Mixed-gender education (co-education) is in itself a major fitnah (source of temptation and trial).
✿ Muslim students—both male and female—should strive to study in environments where gender segregation is maintained.
✿ If due to unavoidable circumstances one must attend a co-educational institute, then it is strongly encouraged that:

Girls seek help from girls, and
Boys seek help from boys.

✿ Contact between male and female students should be avoided, as even well-intentioned interactions can later lead to fitnah.

❖ A Fundamental Jurisprudential Principle:

"Dawā‘ī ilā al-ḥarām, ḥarām"
That which leads to something prohibited is itself prohibited.

❖ Shari'ah Boundaries for Speaking with a Non-Mahram:

✿ Communication with a non-mahram woman is only permissible when:
◈ The conversation remains within dignified bounds.
◈ It is conducted with modesty and seriousness.
All Islamic guidelines of gender interaction are upheld.

✿ The Companions (رضي الله عنهم) would consult Sayyidah A’ishah (رضي الله عنها) for religious matters, but always with full adherence to modesty and proper etiquette.

❖ Conclusion:

Exchanging phone numbers or text messages between a male and female classmate for educational purposes is not permissible, if there is any possibility of fitnah or violation of Islamic etiquette.

✿ The safer and more appropriate option is to seek academic help from someone of the same gender, in order to safeguard one’s modesty and religion.
