If a son demands his father to fulfill a promise of giving a gift, and pressures or compels him to act upon it, then this is not permissible in Islam. Such behavior:
In the Ṣaḥīḥayn, Abū Bakrah ath-Thaqafī رضي الله عنه narrates that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Shall I not inform you of the major sins?”
We said: “Certainly, O Messenger of Allah.”
He said: “Associating partners with Allah and disobedience to parents.”
The Prophet ﷺ was reclining, then he sat up and said:
“Indeed, false speech and false testimony.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 5976, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 87/143)
Children must avoid disobedience and make practical efforts to show good conduct toward their parents.
Allah ﷻ says:
«وَقَضَىٰ رَبُّكَ أَلَّا تَعْبُدُوا إِلَّا إِيَّاهُ وَبِالْوَالِدَيْنِ إِحْسَانًا»
(Al-Isrāʾ: 23)
“Your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him, and show kindness to parents.”
And He also says:
«أَنِ اشْكُرْ لِي وَلِوَالِدَيْكَ إِلَيَّ الْمَصِيرُ»
(Luqmān: 14)
“Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the final return.”
There are numerous evidences in the Qur'an and Sunnah emphasizing respect and obedience to parents.
