❖ Shar‘i Ruling on the Use of Menstruation-Blocking Pills

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd!

◈ The use of menstruation-blocking pills is not Islamically objectionable, provided that:

  • Their use is not medically harmful for the woman.
  • The woman’s husband permits their use.

❖ Medical Concerns and Shar‘i Caution

◈ As far as my knowledge goes, these pills can be harmful to a woman because:

  • Menstrual blood is a naturally occurring blood that exits the body.
  • Preventing the natural discharge from leaving the body at its due time can have harmful effects on health.

❖ Disruption of Habit and Emergence of Doubts

◈ The use of these pills may cause irregularities in a woman’s menstrual cycle, resulting in:

  • Doubt about whether she should perform prayer or not.
  • Confusion regarding the permissibility of marital relations with her husband.

❖ Scholarly Position

◈ Therefore, I do not declare the use of these pills harām, but:

  • I dislike their use.
  • The reason is that they may cause harm to the woman.
  • A woman should be content with what Allah ﷻ has decreed.

❖ Example from the Life of ʿĀ’ishah رضي الله عنها and the Guidance of the Prophet ﷺ

(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Kitāb al-Ḥayḍ, Bāb al-Amr bi-n-Nufasā’ idhā Nufisna, ḥadīth no. 294; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Kitāb al-Ḥajj, Bāb Bayān Wujūh al-Iḥrām, ḥadīth no. 1211)

Meaning:
“What is the matter? Have your days begun?”
ʿĀ’ishah رضي الله عنها replied, “Yes.”
The Prophet ﷺ said: “This is something Allah has decreed upon the daughters of Ādam.”

❖ Guidance for Women

◈ A woman should:

  • Be patient.
  • Expect reward from Allah ﷻ.

◈ If prayer and fasting are not possible during menstruation:

  • The door of dhikr (remembrance of Allah) remains open.
  • During these days:
    • Engage in the remembrance of Allah ﷻ.
    • Recite tasbīḥ.
    • Give charity.
    • Show kindness to people through words and deeds.

These are all highly virtuous acts.
