Islamic Guidelines for a Widow’s Jewelry and Dress During ʿIddah

❀ Islamic Ruling on Jewelry and Clothing for a Widow ❀
Question: Is a widow required to remove her jewelry after her husband’s death?
Answered by: Shaykh ʿAbd al-Razzāq Zāhid ḥafiẓahullāh

❖ Two Types of Jewelry and Their Ruling

Islam makes a clear distinction between ordinary jewelry and ornamental or decorative jewelry, especially in the context of a widow observing her ʿiddah (waiting period).

➊ Ordinary Jewelry

This refers to the type of jewelry commonly used by women for daily purposes, such as:

  • Simple rings
  • Small bangles
  • Modest ornaments worn within the home or during condolence gatherings

✅ A widow is not required to remove this type of jewelry during her ʿiddah.

🔸 The Hindu custom of breaking a widow’s bangles and depriving her of jewelry has no basis in Islam.

➋ Ornamental and Decorative Jewelry

This includes:

  • Bright, flashy, or fashionable jewelry
  • Jewelry that is typically worn for beautification and attraction

❌ It is prohibited for a widow to wear such adornments, especially during her ʿiddah.
❌ Similarly, flashy or fashionable clothing is also not allowed during the ʿiddah period.

✅ However, wearing plain, modest, and appropriate clothing is permissible.

🔸 Contrary to Hindu customs, Islam does not require a widow to wear only white garments. She may wear any dignified and modest attire during her ʿiddah.

✿ Conclusion

◈ A widow may wear simple, everyday jewelry during her ʿiddah.
◈ Wearing decorative or beautifying jewelry and fashionable clothing is not allowed.
◈ Islam does not adopt cultural practices that impose unnecessary hardship, such as forcing widows into white clothing or stripping them of personal ornaments.
