Is Wudu Required After Intercourse Before Returning to One’s Wife?

Ruling on Performing Wudu After Intercourse Before Returning to One’s Wife

Source: Aḥkām wa Masāʾil, Masāʾil al-Nikāḥ, Vol. 1, p. 324

❖ Question

Is there any Hadith stating that after intercourse, if a man wishes to return to his wife, he should perform wudu? The issue is that wudu requires purification from impurity, and without ghusl janābah, wudu is not valid. This seems problematic. Kindly explain in the light of Qur’an and Hadith.

❖ Answer

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, Ammā baʿd!

The point you mentioned:

“For wudu it is necessary to remove impurity or to perform ghusl janābah first.”

Respected questioner, please note:

◈ If one wishes to return to his wife after intercourse, or
◈ If one intends to sleep after intercourse, or
◈ If one wants to eat or drink in the state of janābah,

then performing wudu alone is sufficient.

✿ Clarification Regarding the Condition You Mentioned

The condition you wrote — that removing impurity or performing ghusl janābah is necessary before wudu — has no basis in Sharīʿah.

✿ Permission of Wudu After Intercourse

◈ After intercourse, if one wishes to return to his wife, performing wudu is sunnah, so that freshness and renewed strength may be achieved.

◈ Similarly, if a person in the state of janābah wishes to eat, drink, or sleep, performing wudu is sufficient.

✿ No Evidence of Ghusl Being a Precondition for Wudu

If you have any Qur’anic verse or authentic Hadith stating that:

“It is necessary to remove impurity or perform ghusl janābah before wudu,”

then kindly share it, and we would be grateful.

Until now, Sharīʿah provides no such condition. Hence, the concern you feel should be removed.
