Source: Ahkam wa Masail, Vol. 01, in the light of Qur’an and Hadith, p. 506

❖ Question

Is it permissible to wear pants or not?

❖ Answer

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ʿAmma Baʿd!

When discussing clothing in Islam, one must always remember the saying of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ:

"مَنْ تَشَبَّهَ بِقَوْمٍ فَهُوَ مِنْهُمْ"
"Whoever imitates a people, he is one of them."
[Musnad Aḥmad, Abū Dāwūd – Mishkāt, Kitāb al-Libās, al-Faṣl al-Thānī]

✿ Ruling

  • If wearing pants involves imitating non-Muslim nations in a way that symbolizes their identity or practices, then such clothing should be avoided.
  • Islam discourages adopting distinctive symbols of other nations.
  • Clothing in Islam must reflect modesty, cover the ʿawrah properly, and avoid resemblance to non-believers in a religious or symbolic sense.

❖ Conclusion

Wearing pants is not inherently haram, but if it falls under clear imitation of non-Muslims, then it becomes impermissible and should be avoided.
