Is Uḍḥiyah (Sacrifice) Obligatory Like Ṣadaqat al-Fiṭr?

Source: Fatāwā Āmanpūrī – Shaykh Ghulām Muṣṭafā Ẓahīr Āmanpūrī

❖ Question

Is Uḍḥiyah (qurbānī – Eid sacrifice) obligatory and compulsory like Ṣadaqat al-Fiṭr?

✿ Answer

  • Ṣadaqat al-Fiṭr is farḍ (obligatory).
  • Uḍḥiyah (sacrifice) is a stressed Sunnah (sunnah muʾakkadah), not wājib.
  • There is no authentic evidence to prove its obligation.

Scholarly Statements

Imām Ibn Ḥazm رحمه الله said:

لا يصح عن أحد من الصحابة أن الأضحية واجبة
(al-Muḥallā bil-Āthār 6/10)

“No authentic report exists from any Companion that Uḍḥiyah is obligatory.”

Imām al-Shāṭibī رحمه الله (d. 790H) stated:

“The Companions رضي الله عنهم did not consider sacrifice to be compulsory.”
(al-Iʿtiṣām 2/602)

  • It is authentically reported that Abū Bakr رضي الله عنه and ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb رضي الله عنه sometimes abandoned sacrifice.
    (al-Khilāfiyyāt lil-Bayhaqī 7/335 – with a ṣaḥīḥ chain)

✅ Conclusion

  • Ṣadaqat al-Fiṭr is obligatory.
  • Qurbānī (Uḍḥiyah) is not obligatory but a Sunnah Muʾakkadah.
  • Considering it wājib has no authentic support from the Qurʾān, Sunnah, or the practice of the Companions.
