It is narrated from Sayyidunā Saʿd رضي الله عنه that he heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say:
«من تصبح سبع تمرات عجوة لم يضره ذلك اليوم سم ولا سحر»
"Whoever eats seven ‘Ajwah dates in the morning will not be harmed that day by poison or magic."
[Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Ḥadīth no. 76]
In another narration of Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, the phrase "إلى الليل" ("until the night") is added. In Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, ʿĀmir ibn Saʿd narrated from his father:
«من أكل سبع تمرات مما بين لابتيها حين يصبح لم يضره سم حتى يمسي»
"Whoever eats seven dates from between the two lava plains of Madinah in the morning will not be harmed by poison until evening."
[Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Ḥadīth no. 2047]
These aḥādīth specifically mention the dates of Madinah, especially ‘Ajwah dates, as being effective. General types of dates do not carry the same effect. However, some scholars are of the opinion that any type of date can provide similar benefits. وَاللهُ أَعْلَمُ (Allah knows best).
