Is the Blood Discharge After a Miscarriage Considered Nifas (Postnatal Bleeding)?

Authored by: Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Amaanpuri (حفظه الله)

❖ Question:

Is the blood that appears after a miscarriage considered Nifas (postnatal bleeding)?

❖ Answer:

In the case of a miscarriage, the ruling depends on whether the embryo is formed and clearly identifiable or not:
  • If the embryo is clearly formed, then the blood is considered Nifas (postnatal bleeding).
  • If the embryo is not yet formed, then the blood is not considered Nifas.

Generally, the embryo becomes visibly formed by the 90th day of pregnancy. If the miscarriage occurs before this period and the fetus lacks identifiable human features, then the blood discharge is not classified as Nifas.

✅ Summary:

  • Formed fetus (after 90 days or visibly human): ➤ Blood = Nifas
  • Unformed fetus (before 90 days or not visibly human): ➤ Blood ≠ Nifas
