❖ Is Reciting Tashahhud Necessary After Sujood al-Sahw (Post-Salam)? ❖
Source: Fatāwā ʿUlamāʾ Ahl al-Ḥadīth – Kitāb al-Ṣalāh, Volume 1
There are two methods of performing Sujood al-Sahw (Prostration of Forgetfulness): one before salam and the other after salam.
When Sujood al-Sahw is performed after the salam, is it necessary to repeat the tashahhud or can one simply offer the prostrations and conclude with salam? Please clarify based on Qur'an and Sunnah.
● Shaykh Muhammad ibn Ṣāliḥ al-ʿUthaymīn رحمه الله was asked a similar question. He replied:
“If the prostrations are done after the salam, then it is necessary to offer the salam again. One should perform two prostrations and then say salam.”
In response, the Shaykh added:
“There is a difference of opinion among scholars on this issue, but the strongest and most correct view (rajiḥ) is that reciting tashahhud is not obligatory.”
(Fatāwā Ibn ʿUthaymīn, Vol. 14, p. 74)
● Permanent Committee for Islamic Research and Fatwas (Al-Lajnah al-Dā’imah) was also asked:
Should tashahhud be recited after Sujood al-Sahw—whether the prostration is done before or after the salam?
The Committee responded:
According to the stronger opinion based on authentic evidence:

The Committee responded:
- If Sujood al-Sahw is performed before the salam, then reciting tashahhud afterward is not legislated.
- If it is done after the salam, scholars differ.
- However, the correct opinion is that tashahhud is not legislated after Sujood al-Sahw because no sound hadith proves this, and the reports that mention it are weak and unreliable, thus cannot be used as evidence.
(Fatāwā al-Lajnah al-Dā’imah, Vol. 7, p. 148)
❖ Conclusion:
According to the stronger opinion based on authentic evidence:
- Reciting tashahhud after Sujood al-Sahw done post-salam is not necessary.
- One should simply perform the two prostrations and conclude with the final salam.
