Is Reciting Surah Al-Fatiha Obligatory for the Follower (Ma’mūm) in Congregational Prayer?

Compiled by: Muhammad Nadeem Zaheer Baloch

❀ Introduction

In this article, we aim to explore whether the command to recite Surah Al-Fatiha in Salah applies only to an individual praying alone, or also to one who prays behind an Imam.

◈ The Question

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

"لَا صَلَاةَ لِمَنْ لَمْ يَقْرَأْ بِفَاتِحَةِ الْكِتَابِ"
"There is no prayer for the one who does not recite Surah Al-Fatiha."

Does this ruling apply only to the individual praying alone, or also to the one praying behind the Imam?

❖ The Answer: Clarification from the Prophet ﷺ Himself

① Authentic Hadith Explanation

Hadith:

The Prophet ﷺ led the Fajr prayer and the recitation became difficult for him. After completing the prayer, he asked:

"It seems that you recite behind your Imam?"
They replied: "Yes, by Allah, we do."
He said:
"Do not do so, except for Surah Al-Fatiha, for there is no prayer for the one who does not recite it."

Grading: Shaykh Shu‘ayb al-Arna’ūt: Sahih – with a good chain (إسناد حسن)

Explanation:
This hadith explicitly states that the follower behind the Imam must recite Surah Al-Fatiha, and no prayer is valid without it.

② Clarification from Sayyiduna Umar ibn al-Khattab (رضي الله عنه)

A man from Banu Tamim (ʿAbayah) narrates: I heard Umar ibn al-Khattab (رضي الله عنه) say:
"There is no prayer without Surah Al-Fatiha, and with it."
I asked: “What if I am behind the Imam?”
He replied:
"Recite it silently to yourself."

❖ Clarifications from Hadith Scholars (محدثین کی وضاحت)

① Imam al-Kirmani (رحمه الله):

"The Hadith of ʿUbādah ibn al-Ṣāmit is clear evidence that reciting Surah Al-Fatiha is obligatory for the Imam, the one praying alone, and the follower in all prayers."

Imam al-Khattabi (رحمه الله):

"This hadith is an explicit text indicating that reciting Surah Al-Fatiha is obligatory for the follower, regardless of whether the Imam recites loudly or quietly. The chain is sound with no criticism upon it."
