Is Qur’an Recitation Allowed During Grave Visitations?

✦ Ruling on Reciting the Qur’an During Grave Visitation
Written by: Imran Ayyub Lahori

❖ No Authentic Evidence for Qur’an Recitation During Grave Visitations

There is no authentic proof of Qur’an recitation during the visitation of graves.
In all the narrations regarding grave visits, there is no mention of any Qur’anic recitation. In fact, when Hazrat A’ishah (رضي الله عنها) inquired about grave visitation, the Prophet (ﷺ) taught only a supplication, not recitation.

📘 Ahkam al-Janaiz: p. 241

❖ Indication That Graves Are Not Places for Recitation

The following Hadith implies that graves are not appropriate places for recitation:

لا تـجـعـلـو بيـوتـكـم مـقـابر فإن الشيطان يفر من البيت الذى يقرأ فيه سورة البقرة
"Do not turn your homes into graves. Verily, Satan flees from a house in which Surah Al-Baqarah is recited."

The majority of scholars, including the four Imams, hold this opinion.

✔ Key Point:
Qur’an recitation at graves during visitation has no established basis from the Sunnah. Only du‘a (supplication) is prescribed and taught.
