Is Marriage Between Foster Siblings Through the Father’s Wife Permissible?

Source: Fatāwā Amunpuri by Shaykh Ghulām Muṣṭafā Ẓahīr Amn Pūrī

✿ Question:

Zayd’s second wife breastfed a girl named ʿĀ’ishah. Can Zayd’s son marry ʿĀ’ishah?

✿ Answer:

No, the marriage between them is not permissible.
They are considered foster siblings, because ʿĀ’ishah is the foster daughter of the boy’s father.

Thus, Zayd’s son and ʿĀ’ishah are foster brother and sister, and marriage between foster siblings is prohibited in Islam.

❀ Quranic Evidence:

**
وَأَخَوَاتُكُمْ
**
“…And [forbidden to you in marriage are] your sisters.”

📚 Surah al-Nisā’ (4:23)

This includes foster sisters (رضاعی بہنیں) as well, since all relationships that are prohibited by blood are equally prohibited through breastfeeding.

✔ Summary:

✦ If a girl is breastfed by a man’s wife, she becomes his foster daughter.
✦ Consequently, the man’s biological son becomes her foster brother.
✦ Therefore, marriage between them is forbidden by Islamic law.
